Gertrude Aryn

Gertrude Aryn resembles any other elder in her community. A harmless collector of town gossip, a self-appointed life advisor, and blunt in the same way all old people are. She is the semi-retired owner and operator of a profitable textile factory in the Free City of Hatena.   In reality, this persona and business are merely a front for her real career -- she is the leader of the local Legends Alliance enclave. Her goals are simple. She is to prevent Hatena from being forcibly annexed by the Olimandias Hegemony by any means necessary. No one would suspect that an old lady is running a secret guild of mercenaries and insurgents, so her neighborhood busybody routine is an efficient way for her to collect intel on enemy movements.   "Grandma Gertie" dispatches Alliance agents to spy on Olimandias operatives, and, if necessary, attack their operations. Better to leave field work to the young-bloods now.   She is the matriarch of a powerful family of warriors.

Personal history

Background

A Hylian with traces of Feywild blood, Gertie was born with the gift of innate Wild Magic. She grew up near Resden and did some work for local crime syndicates before becoming a freelance mercenary. During this early career, she witnessed how Olimandias treated the common folk as disposable resources rather than people, too distant and apathetic to properly address any real social issues. She began assistant local resistance efforts.    Members of the Chamber of Sages happened upon her during a skirmish near the Tor-Denma Mountains, and saw her raw magical talent. They offered to give her formal training and a chance to rebel against Olimandias with the full support of a domain. She accepted.  

Chamber of Sages

Gertie was not exactly the best student, finding herself easily bored by arcane scrolls and lectures. She was, however, an excellent field agent. Gertie found herself working with Korhend II and his band of dark knights and arcane raiders. She was noted for her specialization in fire-based combat magic, which was amplified by unpredictable magic surges. Together, they often attacked Hegemony military outposts in northern Muldinach. And one occasion blew up an entire flash rail terminal in the city of Dornimen itself.    By the age of 35, she was given command of her own battalion of battlemages -- the Wildfires. She was also awarded an official title as a senior member of the Chamber, becoming the "Sage of Chaos." As tensions grew between the domains and Olimandias, she became part of a grand alliance in the year 610. And was present for one of the most defining moments in recent history.  

Selena and the Legends Alliance

In 610, Selena Nadir united the armed forces of each domain and was preparing for a major invasion of Olimandias alongside the Kingdom of Unidiel. Gertie's battalion was among several dispatched by the Chamber of Sages to assist. During this time of negotiation and campaign preparation, Selena and Gertie became romantically entangled.   Selena disappeared on the eve of the invasion. Gertie is convinced that Chikara murdered her in the Labyrinth before full deployment, suggesting that Chikara must have become jealous of Selena's growing influence. Without the Alliance's leader, the united domain army broke down into chaos. Gertie's battalion managed to get inside the city walls of Olimandias before they were forced to retreat, sustaining numerous losses.  

Post-Chamber of Sages Career

Gertie remained a member of the new Legends Alliance, which transformed into a resistance organization. Gertie moved to various cities, effectively running her enclaves similar to a syndicate to steal and destroy Olimandias resources. She also had numerous relationships and four children, who went on to have many of their own children, becoming the scion of a large family of warriors. Many of whom joined her in her battles.   

Old Age and the Hatena Enclave

Gertie eventually slowed down her operations after she became an old woman, begrudgingly admitting that she shouldn't be in the field anymore. Instead, she settled in The Free City of Hatena and vowed to prevent its annexation into the Hegemony. To this end, she has been very successful, as the city continues to resist acquisition. She prefers to give out assignments to younger warriors and set them on the path of glorious rebellion.   Most recently, she discovered "Meera" in a dumpster and nursed her back to health after realizing she had amnesia. She then became the party's first "boss," sending them on assignments across Hatena until they were ready to venture forth.
