Selena Nadir

Selena Nadir was once a ruler of the Labyrinth. More specifically, she was the heir to the throne and the Labyrinth's primary warlord.   A powerful warrior, Selena led campaigns against almost every other domain and the nations of the hegemony. Although she was not someone of overly impressive stature, she eviscerated her opponents with masterful fighting techniques and the foul, forbidden magic of the Labyrinth. Selena was planning to lead a major campaign against Olimandias around the year 600 with unprecedented support from the other domains, but she went missing shortly before her armies were set to mobilize. The campaign quickly broke down, and Olimandias now has unchecked influence over the rest of Verden.   She is presumed dead, but her body was never recovered. Some hold out hope for her return. Others are more than happy that she's gone.

Personal history

Birth

Born Selena Garetson, she is the eldest child of Sir Roland Garetson and a powerful celestial named Sarael. Her younger brother is Piers Garetson.   According to folk legends, Piers and Selena's parents separated when they were still young. Their father, desperate to maintain influence at court, sought a relationship with a noblewoman in Resden... but she did not want to support children from a previous relationship. Roland allegedly abandoned the two children at the edge of the Lost Woods. It is considered a cautionary tale on the importance of staying true to your family and not chasing after validation from toxic third parties.   Selena was not content to remain in the Lost Woods, ultimately fleeing for civilization and leaving her brother all alone.

Joining the Labyrinth

Selena's earliest memories involve wandering through Verden as an orphan, stealing and scavenging to sustain herself. She had an innate vicious streak that allowed her to survive harrowing situations, and she had killed her first man before the age of 12. As a child, she came across a Labyrinth warband near the city of Ur'Almen and successfully stole from them. She even challenged one to a duel when she was later discovered. They were impressed with her resourcefulness and ferocity, and decided to bring her back with them as an initiate.   Her already feral nature was further refined by growing up in the violent and hedonistic culture of the Labyrinth. Selena was trained by their master warriors and began leading her own raiding parties around the age of 15.   Chikara Nadir, the Queen of the Labyrinth, began mentoring her upon reaching adulthood. Within another twenty years, Selena was formally adopted into the "royal line" and named the heir of the Labyrinth. This was not a promise. The Labyrinth granted extreme longevity to its most loyal denizens, so Chikara was not going to die of old age. It was a challenge. She could be queen if she could ever overthrow Chikara. Their rivalry was infamous, each inspiring the other to keep their wits sharp and to become stronger than ever before.

The Warlord

More interested in war than governing, Selena spent much of her time abroad leading military campaigns against other domains, especially the Desert of Mystery. She lived for the rush of battle, craving adrenaline and tactical superiority. She likewise led campaigns against the Hegemony, striking cities like Ur'Almen in the dead of night, her troops emerging from the Labyrinth's many subterranean tunnels. Her time spent back home was refreshing and full of the expected indulgences of drink and women, though restlessness would always get the better of her. And back on campaign she'd go.   In the year 600, she began to plan a major offensive against Olimandias. Though she had terrorized the Kingdom of Unidiel countless times in the past, she knew it was the only nation that could prevent Olimandias from having a total stranglehold over the Hegemony. When she heard that Olimandias was set to break the kingdom into two nations to weaken its power, Selena decided to defend her old victim.   Skilled at bringing people together, Selena created an unprecedent alliance between all of the domains, intended to strike the heart of the Hegemony and kill the Lord of Olimandias. The invasion was scheduled for the summer of 610. And that was when Selena disappeared.

Imprisonment

Xer, a cleric of Lazu and a member of the Labyrinth's priesthood, turned traitor. Upset with Chikara's leadership, Xer partnered with Sarael, Selena's mother. Sarael had long wanted her daughter back but was forbidden from entering the underdark, and she likewise wanted Chikara dead. With materials provided by Sarael, Xer opened rifts to the Nine Hells, allowing devils to invade the Labyrinth. Chikara and Selena were caught up in the first wave of the invasion, with only a few members of the royal guard to support them.    The two held their ground for some time, but were eventually overwhelmed. The royal guard was cut down. Selena was about to be slain, and so Chikara decided to cast Imprisonment on her old companion to protect her from all harm -- conveniently blocking the rift's opening as well. The last thing she heard was Chikara telling her: "I will be right back."   But, unbeknownst to her, Chikara subsequently died as a second wave of devils emerged from a second rift.   Selena has remained in the Imprisonment sphere ever since, spending over 100 years trapped in a small space while remaining fully conscious. Isolated from her former family and ignorant of what fate has befallen them in her absence.
