Roland Garetson

Roland Garetson is the biological father of Selena Nadir and Piers Garetson-- and the former lover of Sarael.   Once a gallant knight, Roland Garetson's legacy was to serve as a cautionary tale. Roland was a grandson of a knight who fought in Diel's army during the War of Order and Chaos. He was carrying on the family tradition when he met and fell in love with Sarael, a powerful celestial known as the Sword of Diel. The two seemed to have an excellent relationship at first. Her position of power naturally came with influence at courts around Verden, and so wherever they traveled together, Roland also found himself at the center of courtly affairs.   According to local legends, this became a feeling he grew a little too fond of. Feeling important can be an addiction all by itself.   He had two children with Sarael -- Selena and Piers. The family was happy together for a time, and then Sarael's duties as a fiend-slaying celestial eventually saw her leave on extended adventures. Without them. And without Sarael, Roland's influence at court began to dwindle. And he was no longer seen as important. All of his notoriety was attached to his significant other.   Desperate for continued influence, Roland began to pursue relationships with noblewomen. He eventually found a lady in Resden who wished to settle down with him, but she did not want the "baggage" of children from a previous relationship. And so Roland took his children to the edge of the Lost Woods, hearing that fey folk would adopt them or they would turn into skull kids, and abandoned them there.   He would die a few years later in the year 106.

Alternate Tale

Ransom mentioned that the Silent Guardians of Verden have an alternate take on this story. The Silent Guardians maintain the importance of all aasimar being given a formal education under their direction -- for their safety and society's. Roland is an example of what can go wrong if you defy the law to hand over your children to the Guardians.   Roland was allegedly approached by the Silent Guardians and asked to hand over his children. He refused to give them up and reacted badly, instead vowing that if they wouldn't stop giving chase, then he would take the children somewhere they couldn't be found -- no matter what.   Ransom suggested this "somewhere" was the Lost Woods, as the Feywild pockets are technically part of another plane of existence and thus inhibit someone's ability to scry on people in the Lost Woods.
