9th of Winterfyll, 3517 - The Dark Sister Eclipses the Akadian Coast
When the sun rose on the 9th of Winterfyll, the world's second moon rose with it. In a rare celestial event not seen in thousands of years, the smaller Dark Sister has achieved a temporary synchronized orbit that creates a permanent eclipse over the Akados Coast. Other regions remain unaffected, but it has bathed the land in permanent twilight. The Akadian coast still retains some light during the day, though it seems that the shielding by the Dark Sister is enough that those with sunlight sensitivity are free to walk the lands without detriment.
In at least a bit of fortune, it is well past harvest season and the region has remained largely unimpacted by this sudden change, though much of the populace shares concerns about it and see this as a bad omen. It has however begun to chill the area slightly, while the great currents of the Akados coast have done their part in keeping the region warmer, it is winter and the lack of sunlight is causing the temperature to plummet.
Scholars have speculated that this celestial event was similar to the darkness of 1491. For years it was thought that one of the sun gods was devoured by Aapep the Black Serpent, Eater of the World, The Destroyer, while others believe that its merely a celestial coincidence. Some fear a great upheaval by evil, others have tried to calm the populace and comfort everyone that this is merely a natural but rare phenomena. Unfortunately the records of old do not contain a measure of time, it could be weeks or even months before the moon falls out of sync with the sun again, but until then it rises in the sky with the sun and continues to bathe the land in darkness.
After nearly four months of near-darkness, the sun broke from behind the dark sister for the first time for a few minutes before dipping back behind the moon. Each day a few more minutes of sunlight were seen until months later when the days returned to normal.
The eclipse had some lasting effects. Priests and Clerics of Solanus were empowered as the sun returned, their healing and spells significantly more powerful than their peers, and many began to flock to her worship. Scholars claim the sun goddess was reborn, a deity who had not seen greatness since the age of the Hyperborean empire. The sun shone brightly, when the sun fully emerged from behind the dark sister no clouds blocked its radiant glow for an entire month.
Unfortunately the absence of light allowed the forces of darkness to gain much ground during the eclipse months. Those from the underdark rose up, citadels and forts of evil were erected in the absence of the forces of light, and the struggle versus evil begun anew to bring safety to the region.
