Fallen Succubus
Note: Fallen Succubi are lusty demons ripped out of the abyss. This article contains mature themes and a dark backstory, and may not be appropriate for every group or campaign. Discretion is advised
Succubus are formed from the soul of a particularly wicked humanoid, usually an elf or human, that undergoes centuries of perverse torture and mutilation in an abhorrent method of metamorphosis. The process thoroughly warps the creature into the demon of lust known as a Succubus. Most often this process is overseen by powerful demons such as balors in secure fortresses or locations far from risk of them escaping, as Succubus are dangerous enemies and valuable tools in the blood war and not worth the risk of losing. Souls capable of this process of transformation are often hand-plucked from the River Styx, and highly coveted by powerful demons for their use in corrupting mortals, demons and devils alike.
It is very uncommon but not unheard of for a Succubus to escape during this process and find its way to the material plane. If the metamorphosis process is interrupted, succubus that are strong of will can form a material body and occasionally maintain enough sanity and determination to survive. Usually this process is interrupted by some sort of invasion or upheaval. Whether it is powerful adventurers, angels, devils, rival demonic factions or some other force, the succubus finds itself free from its bondage before truly developing into a full demon.
If the Metamorphosis process is ended too early, within the first few decades of its torture, the Succubus is not strong enough to survive beyond their bonds, and their essence will simply fade back into the primordial abyss or they will devolve into a Mane. A succubus does not form the ability to drain the essence of a creature until very late in the metamorphosis process deliberately to prevent them from being self-sustaining early on. During a succubus development they will be starved for decades, receiving no physical comfort or contact besides torture, and will be warped by the abyss to develop the craving for mortals that they are known for. If this metamorphosis process ends too late but before they are able to feed, a succubus will starve and die. In the middle ground of the Metamorphosis process lies a time where a Succubus is not capable of feeding on mortals but also does not require it. They have begun to develop some succubus traits, but are missing many of the abilities found in their true demon form. If freed during this time, most perish rather quickly. Even fewer are capable of forming a functional physical body, and even the ones who are capable of survival are often slain or captured. Whether through a portal, a lucky chance of summoning, convincing mortals to take them to the material plane or some other event, the Fallen Succubus finds itself free from the Abyss.
When a Fallen Succubus enters the material plane, this is usually what the Succubus considers its day of birth. It is a shocking experience to the succubus, almost like being submerged in water after a lifetime of being parched. They find it overwhelming and joyful, the color, wind, air and water all new experiences to the succubus. But this brings unpleasant experiences as well, for the abyss was capable of sustaining their essence while in it, in the material plane they suddenly find hunger, thirst and loneliness. Fallen Succubus are not capable of drawing energy from across the planes and require food and water like any mortal. They appear as idealized versions of their former selves in both their forms, with their fiendish form possessing horns, tails, forked tongues and large wings. They have the shapeshifting capabilities of a succubus but lack the ability to form different forms, instead only being able to transform between their demon and regular forms, both of which appear similar.
Unsurprisingly most Fallen Succubus possess the lusty carnal desires of their creation, but many simply desire more pure forms of companionship such as friendship and family. Their alignments can vary wildly, while it is expected that a wicked fiend from the abyss would always be evil, most escaped succubus are good. Its possible they have a good deity has subtly aided them or the exposure to the material plane has awakened a sense of good in them. Others are just as wicked and cruel as their old mortal selves.
Fallen Succubus are intelligent and charismatic creatures, and often find safety in an adventuring party or town. But since they are still fiends, once discovered they find it hard to convince others of their benevolence. Many know of the succubus, and its nearly impossible to erase the suspicion that their words are anything other than lies once their true form is revealed. Even worse is they appear as fiends to magic, and this is often enough to condemn them in many faiths. Because Fallen Succubus lack the ability to shift to the ethereal plane, they are fairly vulnerable should they be cornered. A Sucubus does not age, but are at great risk should they die. If a Succubus soul passes beyond the threshold they do not go to the River Styx but are returned to the Abyss.
Because of their fiendish heritage, many Succubus find themselves drawn to the divine as a way of shielding themselves from their past and creation. Unfortunately getting in the doors can be difficult, as many temples are warded against fiends. Most are weary of pacts and as such warlocks are rare, but many Succubus are inherently magical and find they have sorcerous powers.
