Isturian Inhumation

When an Isturian passes away, the most important thing is to put their body beneath the ground, as close to Drevok as possible, so that they God of Time may accept them and turn them back into the stone from which all people first began life. Their spirit is seen to inhabit their lifeless body until it is reclaimed by the earth, at which point they are absorbed back into the mountains and the rest of the world.   This is unless they have led an extraordinarily noble life of sacrifice, a life spent in the defence of those who cannot defend themselves. In this case, Kohra will take their spirit to their realm beyond the clouds, to continue their campaign of battle and sacrifice, protecting those below from otherworldly threats.   However, for the most part, Isturians will take their eternal rest with their bodies beneath the ground. It is considered decent and even expected for bodies to be buried; a cremation or anything else would be sacreligious, potentially depriving the body and spirit of the chance to be reclaimed by the earth. It is from this social norm that the myth of the Revenant Knight was created, a figure that rejected a noble burial and was cursed with undeath.   While most will be buried with a cairn or other small monument built upon their graves, the individuals of the greatest reverence or renown will have specially-built tombs for them, far underground. The deeper these bodies are buried, the closer they are to Drevok, the more likely they will be recognised by the deity. Although these individuals may have specially-made sarcophagi, the base will always be left open and they will be filled with earth.
