Dwarf

Stat Block: Dwarf

“Whoo! These buggers sure gave us a run for our money didn' they?" the Dwarven explorer chuckled as he wiped his hammer free of goo. with a loud squelch Bastian pulled his spear from the strange frog creature he had just slain, his chest still heaving from the fight "Aye sir, it seems you've brought us to a place we're not wanted." the Dwarf chuckled again "well! you didn't expect finding the greatest discovery of our time would be easy now did ye?" He shouldered his hammer and marched forward "c'mon kid there's still lots of island here and I intend to see it all!"
-- From the journal of Bastian Morroe on accompaning Gadeus Hogenbrand's famous first landing on what would be known as the Maelstrom Isles.
Underground kingdoms rich in ancient grandeur, halls carved into the roots of mountains, the echoing of picks and hammers in deep mines and blazing forges, a commitment to clan and tradition, and a burning hatred of goblins and orcs—these common threads unite all dwarves.   Dwarves have a large presence on The Maelstrom Isles . Though there are not an abundance of habitable mountain ranges, where they usually build their homes, the Isles contain a large amount of ruins and treasure that calls to dwarven hearts.

Subraces

  • Mountain Dwarves: make their homes deep under the mountains and divide themselves into clans.
  • Gray Dwarves: Grey Dwarves are a subrace of mountain dwarves that live in the deepest depths of the mountains. Its quite rare to see them above ground as their bodies have evolved to survive in the darkest pits of the world.

Homelands in Western Rodain

Mt. Windhelm has proved to be a prosperous mining site, run by the Moltenhart Clan, they are the top producers of Odunite . The Rekt Peaks are currently in a civil war between three clans: the Dweldeeps, the Ironheads, and the Olderstone Clan. The mountain produces much of the world’s Iron and Coal and the civil war is taking its toll on the world’s resources. The feud extends to the Isles but within the city of Alabaster the clans are ordered to stay peaceful. The White Mountains are run by no clans but by the Church of the Strongfather and Strongmother, many of the world’s finest gems come from these mountains. The regions of Dolgemar and Hotenben are considered Hill Dwarf territory as their villages are found dotted along the mountainsides and amongst the rolling hills, though they are peaceful to each other they stay separate. Dwarves have also integrated themselves amongst the other races of the world as they find their skills are much sought after and they can make a good living.

Homelands in the Rest of the Known World

  • Off the coast of the Hellfire Desert sits the Thunderdeep Islands. These are volcanic Islands surrounding Mount Thunderdeep itself, a huge black volcano jutting from the earth and often belching smoke. Four Dwarvish tribes live on the slopes of Mount Thunderdeep and many smaller tribes live among the islands. The four prominent tribes; the Totemshards, the Earthdancers, the Ashcasters, and the Coastkeepers, are led by Master Shamans who work together to keep the Fires of Mount Thunderdeep in check. It's said that the volcano has a strong tie to the Elemental Plane of Fire and if left unchecked could unleash untold destruction across the world.
  • The Great Njordlund the Wulffang Mountains are inhabited by the Frostbeards, the Farlochs, the Mightsmiths, the Frozenhammers, the Blindstones, the Ironclaws, the Underbloods, the Deepsbanes, the Solidspines, the Goldenclads, the Broadirons, and the Runebellows. All twelve families are part of The Great Njordlund, their mountains are the northernmost border of civilized land, past that is Frost Giant Lands.

Religion

  • The largest worshiped deities amongst Dwarves are the Strongfather and Strongmother. The massive cathedral that serves as the church’s headquarters sits atop Mt. Radiant in the The White Mountains.
  • Many Hill Dwarf villages have found worship in Nature and her mysterious ways and powers.
  • The Northern Realms are united in their worship of The Maidens of Fate including the Dwarven Clans of the Wulffang Mountains.
  • When Dwarves live among others for long periods of time they have been known to pick up other religions.
