Emet Kaldas

As you walk down the steps into the bar that morning, you can see the bartender behind the bar. He's half-heartedly cleaning a glass as you come into his view, but he seems to be more focused on something he's thinking about. His brown shirt is stained from last night, and you can tell he didn't sleep well either. In the morning light, you can see the flash of the pin on his tunic as he scrambles to put the mug away.   "He returns!" he announces to the nearly-empty bar. "How are you doing this morning, sport? Hopefully not as tired as you look!" He laughs, and his smile widens.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Emet is a thin man, with pale skin and drink stains on his clothes because of his work. He carries a cheerful expression, and he wears a pin overtop of his brown clothing.

Body Features

He is rather thin, with pale skin from long days working in the dank bar of the Dargin's Den.

Facial Features

He often carries a smile or at least a cheerful face, and his short eyebrows and short hair frame his face well.

Identifying Characteristics

Emet commonly carries a small badge on his chest, a gift from a travelling merchant. It depicts a darg with its paws outstretched.

Apparel & Accessories

Apart from the badge, he wears a short tunic and shorter trousers, usually brown or tan in colour. The clothes themselves are usually stained from food, drink, or maybe nastier things.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Emet's father was the previous owner of The Dargin's Den, and he taught his son the ropes: how to wait on tables, how to clean up spills, how to count coin and purchase ale and beer. The young Emet, though, was assured that he would own the inn someday, and he didn't take to his father's teachings until a bar fight turned deadly when he was twenty-two. Emet quickly caught on to his duties, but he still yearns for that time before his father's death where he had less responsibility. This manifests when the bar is not busy, as he sits there and dreams of a simpler time...   The Drakeslayers stayed at Emet's inn for a few nights, and he made the acquaintance of many of them during that time.

Education

His father taught him how to do his job, and when he decides to do it, he does a good job.

Employment

Emet has only ever worked in the inn, cleaning rooms and manning the bar.

Mental Trauma

Despite his outgoing personality and love for loud conversation, he suffers silently under the weight of his responsibilities, which has led to him having a low opinion of himself.

Intellectual Characteristics

Emet isn't the sharpest tool in the shed, and he often acts before he can come up with a proper solution.

Morality & Philosophy

He has a clear sense of right and wrong, but he often disregards it in favour of whatever is the most scandalous and embarrassing for other people. While he knows he should be doing other things, he has quite the hedonistic streak and can usually be found egging on some competition or participating in games and dancing.

Taboos

  • Emet will never serve ale on a Day of Etheric morning, although he isn't sure why.
  • Similarly, he never stocks wine or stronger drink, out of fear of another deadly drunken brawl.
  • He is easily grossed out, so he'll usually leave conversations that turn gory.
  • Personality Characteristics

    Motivation

Emet's goals are just to keep the inn running smoothly. That is, in itself, a tremendous goal, and one he usually doesn't feel up for, despite his efforts. Beyond that, he is interested in having a family. However, the zany and constant nature of his work make this a difficult goal to reach.

    Savvies & Ineptitudes

  • He can usually get a good read on people when he puts his mind to it.
  • He's pretty bad at running the bar, usually leaving Peri the Barmaid to do it while he mingles with the guests.
  • He's a bit of a dreamer, with a propensity for day-dreaming.
  • Likes & Dislikes

  • Despite signs to the contrary, he actually enjoys running the bar a lot.
  • He enjoys chatting it up with regular patrons and travellers.
  • He hates gross messes and usually gets Peri to clean them up.
  • Virtues & Personality perks

  • He is a great judge of character, often pinpointing which people are going to be a problem and which will not.
  • His personality can often be described as outgoing, which is a huge boon for his business.
  • Vices & Personality flaws

  • He can't often be bothered to do the day-to-day work to keep the place running, with Peri picking up most of the legwork.
  • His love of drama and scandal sometimes means that he doesn't report crimes or suspicious behaviour in his bar.
  • Personality Quirks

  • He has a flair for the dramatic, commonly announcing the arrival of his various guests and regulars.
  • Hygiene

Emet keeps himself clean, although his shirts and trousers are commonly stained from years of bar messes and fights. His room is very messy, often strewn with crockery and bedsheets.

    Social

    Contacts & Relations

  • He is a long-time customer of Sari Fehaz and his brewery, often gushing about the good quality of beer from that brewery and how it often sells out.
  • A lifetime in Freebrook and a fondness for gossip means he knows pretty much everyone in town.
  • Family Ties

His family have all passed away, and he hasn't married yet.

    Religious Views

Emet goes to services like everyone else in town, but he doesn't put a lot of faith into it. He has a healthy fear of religion, especially ones that are not his own.

    Social Aptitude

He is extremely outgoing, spending much of his time chatting and gossiping with bar patrons and guests at the inn. He doesn't have a lot of confidence in himself, however. He loves showing off the inn and how well it's doing as a way of showing off how good he is, which is borderline egotistical behaviour. He isn't very well mannered, with a fondness for rude address and swearing.

    Mannerisms

He has lots of little nicknames for people, being fond of calling people "sport", "buddy", or "friend", regardless of how familiar he is with them.

    Hobbies & Pets

  • Outside of running the inn, he can often be found chatting with patrons, aiming to learn the newest news and the juiciest gossip.
  • When he's not interacting with people as an innkeeper, he's chatting with people and trying to find himself a lover.
  • Speech

His voice is loud, often annoyingly so, and mid-range.

    Wealth & Financial state

Emet makes a great deal of money as an innkeeper. He usually uses his excess cash to get more difficult-to-find beers and ales from across the province and to do repairs to the building. This doesn't leave him with a lot of money, and his bets and gambling usually eats up the rest.
