Grand Grate

The title given to the leader of the Grate Guards in the city of Algrate.  The position is one of military command over the guards. 
It is given to one of the most seiner members of the Grate Guards. The job involves working closely with the emperor of the city. They hold the title for 10 years and during that time they become a powerful member in the city with many of the past Grand Grates becoming emperor in the years to follow. This position can not be held for more then one term. And while they can continue to be in the guard after their term it is rare for most of them to do this, and these to normally mark the ending of a guards career. 
The other thing that is common through out most of the men who have held this title is their connections to the Shadow Writers. This secret organization is head quartered in the city and has its hands deep into the government of the city. As such the nomination of Grand Grate is almost always ridded. Because of this it has almost always beed won by a high level member of the Shadow Writers. One that has already shown their loyalty and knows Shadow Code. Because of this connection and the loyalty that is required by the organization, the Grand Grates have usually been more devoted to the Shadow Writers then the city or the other guards.
