Non-Newtonian
Non-Newtonians are amorphous, intelligent beings with no typical shape. They hail from Newton's Moon, a shallow ocean moon with minimal spots of land. Around other intelligent species, they typically take on a bipedal form, but there's little chance of mistaking them for anything else. Naturally, they are translucent and colorless, but can absorb the pigments of any food they consume. Many Non-Newtonians use this capability to absorb dyes for cosmetic purposes.
Biology and Appearance
Non-Newtonians are fundamentally similar to the Terran amoebas. They consumes food by osmosis and excrete waste through small pores. They can move fluids through their body consciously and at an incredible rate, allowing them to resist the effects of harmful substances like poisons. They breathe by absorbing oxygen through their skin, able to do so when the oxygen is dissolved in either gas or liquid. Their limbs are strong and flexible enough to grasp and manipulate weapons and tools. Non-Newtonians also absorb all food from their skin. Digestive chemicals are then pulled from anywhere in the body and relocated to where the food was absorbed, where they will then dissolve the food. The body then separates fuel from waste; fuel is spread throughout the body, and waste is excreted back through the skin, at a location of the Non-Newtonian's choosing. Food is often plainly visible inside of the Non-Newtonian's body over the course of 1-2 hours. Non-Newtonians have no central nervous system; sentience seems to have evolved out of a complex, fluid, interconnected web of neurons. This nervous system can change shape as easily as their body. While Non-Newtonians sleep, they often loose whatever shape they held in consciousness and return to a shapeless blob. Non-Newtonians also don't possess organs; their body is essentially a completely homogenous mixture of useful cells and chemicals. They are also bioluminescent, which is only visible in darkness. These amorphous aliens have no concept of biological sex, but Non-Newtonians in contact with humans and other gendered intelligent species sometimes choose a gender that they resonate with. They can also reproduce both sexually and asexually. Asexual reproduction requires a huge amount of nutrients, and will occur over a period of 150 hours while the Non-Newtonian essentially hibernates. Two identical Non-Newtonians result from the process, both temporarily malnourished, that contain the same memories & identity. Sexual reproduction, which is considered the norm in Non-Newtonian society (and, of course, evolutionarily better for genetic diversity), takes around one hour, where two Non-Newtonians congeal together and form a single newborn Non-Newtonian, much smaller in size. This Non-Newtonian is fully born immediately after sex, and even contains some of the memories of its parents (which are usually forgotten in adolescence. For the first year or so, the newborn Non-Newtonian eats only through osmosis from his parents, as the digestive chemicals haven't been fully developed.Society and Culture
The primary Non-Newtonian method of communication is through altering their shapes; with enough practice, Non-Newtonians can reform their limbs into complex shapes at a rate quick enough for a visual language. Different forms and patterns convey emotions, intentions, and social cues, fostering a complex non-verbal communication system. The fluid nature of their bodies also allows them to physically merge and connect nerve cells, creating another path for language. This is the quality that translator technology employs to translate Non-Newtonian communication into a verbal language. This method is commonly used intimately, between friends, family, loved ones, or in important decision-making, where unity of thought becomes important. Another facet of culture in which Non-Newtonians use their fluid nature is in art and performance; storytelling techniques involving the reshaping of their bodies and altering their bioluminscence predate to ancient times, and continue into the Non-Newtonian's modern history. Non-Newtonians specialize in biomorphic architecture, and the substances that make up their moon certainly lended themselves to such a theme. Non-Newtonian buildings take on organic, soft shapes that can shift and morph over time. Buildings resemble living organisms, with flowing lines and dynamic forms that can respond to environmental conditions. Houses are soft and malleable, able to change their configurations to accommodate different activities. Every home is constructed to respond to the preferences of the individuals, which can always change over time. The architecture adapts to the specific needs of each Non-Newtonian, providing a personalized living envionment. Buildings are also always embedded with bioluminescent materials, illuminating the surroundings during periods of darkness.Characteristics
