Mahthildis, dowager Queen of Deira and mother to King Eadric of Deira, has been confined under house arrest in southern Deira since she attempted to prevent her son from taking the throne after the death of Eotwulf on the grounds that he was a fool who could never hold the kingdom. She was betrayed by a nameless Albannach stableboy who opened a postern gate to Eadric's forces - many believe that this was at the behest of Albannach resistance forces who believed that Eadric would be easier to overthrow than his mother.
