Celestial Sprites

Miscevious lights in the dark forest

Legends of the Sprite

The little creature called a Celestial Sprite by old-wives tales and explorers alike has persisted in the myths of the Mortal Lands since the most ancient of eras. There are even records of appearances in Memoria archives, albeit far rarer than they are today.   The most peristent rumor is that they feed on the souls of the Dead, hence their tendency to flock to barren and forsaken parts of the Mortal Lands where not only does nothing live, but few men dare to tread. Others state that they exist to guide the dead to the Walkers for their eternal pilgrimage. While this particular myth has faded somewhat after the coming of the Savior and the ecclesiatical changes in doctrine that followed, it persists in the mythos of the Abaisi.   It is also said that if one wishes, for whatever reason, to see a Celestial Sprite without passing through the Mortal Veil, one must bring with them to a barren place a concoction imbued with healing potency. If accosted by a strange, gremlin-like creature along the journey, one must give the concoction to it. Only then will the traveler be blessed with the ability to see Celestial Sprites.

Features of the Sprite

Celestial Sprites resemble small balls of golden or silver light, with little outcroppings that one could call rays, or tentacles for the less mentally-enclined. No bigger than the size of a man's hand, these sprites tend to float in the air and dance around trees, branches, ruined buildings; anything that provides a form of arial challenge.   They have no face or sensory features to speak of, leaving anthropologists stymied as to just how these creatures can sense and navigate the world around them. It is believed they are sub-species of the Pixie, but as none have been captured for study it is hard to say.   Sprites, despite their penchant for barren places, love to play with mortal people. One who has been blessed with the ability to see one will find that they are quite friendly and playful.

Finding a Sprite

Celestial Sprites can only be found in abandoned places in the world-those forsaken by Man and Creature alike, especially after great calamity. The more desolate and barren the location, the more likely it is to see a Celestial Sprite.   Historians have worked tirelessly to map sightings of the Celestial Sprite, leading to the revelation of its habitat preferences. Why it prefers such desolate locales, however, and why it is not spotted in settled or populated places of death, is not yet known.
