Pixie

Anthropolgy Log   On the Nature of Pixies   Pixies are a curious anthorpologic mystery, even for the Mortal Lands. No scientist, biologist or naturalist before this point has even been sure if the Pixies are truly sentient-at least, in the same way that Humans, Golsmiths and the Tree-folk are. They are capable of making tools, sure, but even a common monkey will use a rock to break open a coconut. Do they have emotions? Do they have morals? A sense of right and wrong? Do they dither over the opinions of their neighbors, or the winter harvests?   It is time for me to put these and many more questions about the Pixie to rest.

The Nature of Pixies

Pixies, as a general rule, are not more than a few inches high. They've been the source of many a myth regarding 'little people' and 'sprites'. Some, but not all sub-species have wings, whose design varies based on the sub-species. Plants and bugs are their preferred diet, mostly as most mammals are too big for them to safely hunt.   They tend to gather in small colonies for survival, sharing resources and beds with abandon. It's unknown what their lives are like when left undisturbed-whenever a human approaches, the pixies have almost an impulsive desire to play tricks. Considering the long, long history of Pixies being abudcted and enslaved for the dust they generate, this is likely a deeply-ingrained defensive measure.   Those pixies that have integrated themselves into cities such as Poartlind have a tendency to 'mimic' the surrounding people and culture. I also suspect that this is part of their survival instinct; to better blend in and be 'appealing' to the existing fauna, and therefore less likely to be eaten or taken away. In cities this extends to using discarded items as 'furniture' and using scraps of cloth to mimick the common fasions of the time. Their penchant for hats, though, seems to defy this survival instinct.

Classifications of Pixie

There are several sub-species of Pixies, each with their own characteristics and abilities. Some are more well known than others, and in certain cultures are said to bring good luck.
Flora Pixies
Perhaps the most well-known Pixies, at least in Mira and much of the Eastern Seaboard. These pixies tend to cluster in dense greenery and prefer lush wildlife. Those in the cities will be hired by restaurants and institutions to tend the flower beds and gardens. They will live on-site, in hidden villages deep in the bushes. Their wings resemble those of butterflies, lending to their nature characteristics.

Aquis Pixies
The second-most common species, these pixies flock around sources of water like springs and waterfalls. Their dust is said to cleanse waters and revitalize dying springs. While they are not as likely to be found in cities, they are often seen splashing in bird fountains in smaller villages and old ladies' gardens. Their wings resemble those of dragonflies.
Lunis Pixies
Pixies rarely seen in much of the Mortal Lands, these pixies hide in deep caves. They use glowing ink distilled from a rare plant to create tatoos across their bodies, telling stories of their grand adventures in the dark. While their wings resemble those of [bats, I'm not doing bats], they are quite harmless and enjoy leading adventurers on chases in the dark. It's said they can be bribed to lead the way safely if you bring the right offering.

Carpenter Pixies
While these pixies had another 'common name' before being integrated into civilization, their penchant for fixing things and building has earned them the moniker 'carpenter'. While these pixies do not have wings, they make up for it in sheer ingenuity and resourcefulness. Many a landlord has benefited from having a Carpenter pixie on the property.
