Personal history
Yui Kaito was an orphan on the streets of Hujiang in the Northern Earth Kingdom. She grew up raised by the city, offered food and shelter from those who remember Avatar Kyoshi's childhood tales. As she entered her teens, she began participating in Lei tai, pretending to be much older than she really was. Slowly she began making a name for herself in the fighting pits of the Earth Kingdom. It was in her 13th year that Avatar Kyoshi came into her life.
Yui was chosen by Kyoshi herself to train as an inaugural member of a new tradition, the Kyoshi Warriors. A non-bender herself, Yui's training focused on using the opponent's momentum against them. Kyoshi fought with Yui's more violent tendencies; seeing her younger self in Yui's brutality. The focus on momentum training was two-fold, as it both trained Yui in a more clever fighting style, but also force Yui to focus her actions as reactions to her opponent instead of blindly rushing forward.
Yui was one of 6 girls chosen by Kyoshi to join her team of Warriors, and was the second girl to be given her fans, headdress, and makeup. Kana, an older girl and Yui's rival, was the first to recieve her attire.
Kyoshi asked the two initiated girls to accompany her on a secret quest to meet a Northern Water Tribe leader. The girls were to remain hidden "No matter what happens".

Absence and Abandonment
Kana says its better that we survived. Easy for her to say. Kyoshi was the closest thing I had to a mother.
How dare she not let me die with Sifu.
Kana said we have to continue her legacy, train up the rest of the girls. She could handle that herself. Sifu always said Kana had the mentality of an ideal warrior. A mentality she thought I lacked. Look where that mentality brought us now, Sifu. Running like scared little girls while you lie there preparing for your next life.
I... I hope I get to meet you again. When you come back...
I'll be waiting.
