Penance

Penance are the smallest unit of soft currency in the Mottled Demesne and replaces copper pieces. A Ledgers book may fill up quickly with hundreds or thousands of Penance transactions, especially in lower socio-economic areas.
One pays a Penance by publicly apologizing to Her Majesty The Queen Mother  for failing to protect her kingdom or rising in arms against her before Her Declaration of Expungement.
Those who were born after the expungement (+0 AE) are required to apologize for recent transgressions, such as failing to complete a transaction before a Ledger, owning an illegal item or partaking in blasphemy.
Whether the Queen Mother decides to forgive a Penance or not will be determined at Her leisure.
