Naming Traditions

Family names

Instead of family names, Ralcondrian given names are followed by their parents', grandparents', and great-grandparents' names.  Marriages are permitted only between individuals who have no names in common.

Culture

Shared customary codes and values

Hard work is of prime importance.  The colony was built and continues to expand mainly through physical labor, and most social interactions take place while on community work crews.

Coming of Age Rites

Ralcondrians are assigned at birth into cohorts called fivespans. As children, they are expected to socialize almost exclusively within their own fivespans, with the purpose of forming a cohesive group that will better survive the Trial of Life. At each fifth year's beginning, the oldest fivespan is sent into an uninhabited section of forest, and must spend the next half year building a settlement. Upon their return, they are ceremonially recognized as adults.
