Personal history

Val of Bendil was the eldest Son of the Potentate of Bendil. When his father died he assumed the throne at the age of 20. At the age of 22 he made the aquaintence of a small group of mages who specialized in laying magic into items that would last for a short time. In exchange for creating items for his army and city/state, Val agreed to house and fund them. A neighborying city state, Zwintar, grew wary of this and tried to launch a surprise attack on Bendil. By the time the Zwintar army arrived at Bendil the mages had created only a few items, specifically five suits of armor that would wrap the wearer in shadows, making them difficult if not impossible to see in the darkness.    While the Zwintarian army deployed and set in for a siege, Val and his four most trusted soldiers snuck out of the city wearing the new armor. In the middle of the night they crept into the enemy camp. Under the cover of magical shadows they slew the Prince of Zwintar and his seniormost officers while they were in council. At Dawn  Val of Bendil, back behind his walls, sent his terms to the demoralized enemy army.    "Surrender or none of you shall live to see tomorrow's dawn."   Less then an hour later, the most senior officer still alive approached the city gates alone and on foot. The gates opened and Val, also alone, exited, still clad in the shadow inducing armor. The enemy captain went to his knees and bowed his head to the ground laying the Zwintar Flag before him in offering.   Val of Bendil accepted the surrender and to the surprise of the enemy asked one question.   "Will you serve me?" The officer, not raising his head, vowed he and his entire army would serve if their lives and their families lives were spared the Great Potentate's Wrath. Val agreed and the Zwintar force was welcomed into Val's forces. The combined Army immediatly marched on Zwintar itself. Outside it's walls they did not set up for a seige. The set camp and waited. At night the former Zwintar Captain, wearing Val's own armor, led the Potentate's four warriors int through a secret passage into the city and in one bloody night, slew every senior official and military officer still alive in the city.   At Dawn the guards on duty at the gate threw them opened and bowed to the ground. Val entered Zwintar. Any who completely surrendered was given the choice to serve or to leave, paid a soldier's wage for a month. Some small few took the the coin and were allowed to leave. When the first few were allowed to leave almost the entire city went their knees and vowed to serve. The Zwintar Captain was given the name of Bolderin and as reward for his singular decleration of loyalty during the night's assault, was given command of a new force commissioned by Val.    The Shadowguard.   The next ten years were a decade of similar conquest. Several city states banded together to try to stop the upstart who was rising to power. The Shadowguard would be deployed and decapitate any resisistance. Not every enemy was defeated this way. Several large battles were fought when enemies thought to keep the conflict from their cities. But enough time had passed that the mages that Val had contacted with had time to generate items of fell power that Val used to excellent effect. No one who came against Val of Bendil were victorious.   In 2167 BF, having conquered every City State within a hundred km of Bendil, Val declared himself Val the First, Emperor of The Bendil Empire. Val spent the next 40 years stabalizing his new empire and when he passed away in the spring of 2127 BF his son, Tiven, took the throne of a strong nation.
