Circles of the Untamed
Purpose:
The Circle of the Untamed serves as the guardian and preserver of the natural order, balancing the encroachment of civilization with the wilds of nature. They act as intermediaries between civilized lands and the untamed wilderness, protecting the natural world and the communities that border it from the threats of magical and mundane origins.
Influence: Members of the Circle are revered as wardens of the wild, often called upon to mediate disputes that arise at the boundaries of civilization and nature. Their deep understanding of natural magic makes them pivotal in healing blighted lands, tracking unnatural creatures, and dealing with environmental catastrophes.
Leadership: The Circle is led by a council of Archdruids representing different biomes—forests, mountains, deserts, swamps, and coasts. Each Archdruid is an expert in their respective ecosystem and brings their unique perspective to the council, ensuring a holistic approach to environmental issues.
Membership: Membership begins with a period of mentorship under a seasoned member of the Circle. Aspirants are expected to learn the ways of druidic magic and the philosophies of natural balance and coexistence. They undergo rigorous training involving survival skills, studying flora and fauna, and mastering nature-based magic.
Rituals and Symbols: Upon completion of their mentorship, initiates must undertake a solitary pilgrimage into the heart of their chosen biome to commune with nature and prove their dedication. This culminates in a ceremony where they present tokens of their journey—a feather from a great bird, a stone from the deepest cave, or water from a sacred spring—to the Archdruids.
Successful initiates receive a totem that symbolizes their bond with the Circle and commitment to the wilds. This totem serves as a focus for their druidic powers and recognition of their status within the Circle.
Titles and Recognition: Upon returning from their pilgrimage, members are granted the title of Druid, along with a specific title that reflects their chosen specialty, such as "Guardian of Groves" or "Warden of Rivers." Senior members who have shown exceptional dedication may be invited to join the ranks of the Archdruids.
Internal Conflict and Politics: Within the Circle, there are differing ideologies about how to deal with the spread of civilization—some advocate for aggressive protection of natural lands, while others promote education and cooperation with urban societies. These varying philosophies can sometimes lead to internal strife, providing complex narrative threads for players to unravel.
