Skimmer Drives

Skimmer Drives are the common name used to refer to the Mperi faster-than-light travel system. Precise details of them are currently unknown to humanity, but they are known to function by rapidly opening and closing short-range wormholes in front on a travelling ship, giving it the impression of "skimming" along the fabric of space. This FTL method is assumed to be relatively inefficient, but it has been noted by military theorists that it would give the Mperi a significant tactical advantage over human ships in combat, even those equipped with jump drives.
