Incorporeals

History

The Incorporeals are, admittedly, the group I know the least about. In fact, until I started The Library, I didn't go near them. As their name suggests, they have studied how to turn themselves into the wind. Unlike the Weightcasters, however, they don't seem to have figured out how to stabalize it. That's right, some magic is too dangerous even for Scavengers

What I know is this: Incoporeals are centered on Castevon, and from what I know, they've been there since the Great Magic War. I suspect they originally fled to the island to hide themselves. I also suspect the entirety of Castevon traces back to those original Incorporeals, as lots of folks on the island are aware of the magic, but refuse to mess with it. Over centuries, people emmigrated, as people do, and you now find pockets of Incporporeals all over the world.

They turn themselves into wind by breaking themselves into pieces through the facets of a stone, like light through a prism. As such, they only use translucent stones. The size and shape of the stone determines the limit of the power that can be put through it, and therefore the length of time one can remain incorporeal. After repeated use, or if too much power has been put through it, a stone can break or even shatter.

Once they are wind, they can move themselves, but can also be swept up by stronger pieces of wind. Furthermore, after becoming wind, they can enter into someone's body and possess them. They cannot work magic in the form of wind, however, and when the power of a spell is used up, they return to their human form. If they are in too small a space and cannot return to human form, their wind "bodies" are ripped apart.

Education

Incorporeals usually do not being study until they are adults, and most of them learn through apprenticeships. This is the only way to study outside of Castevon, though there are a few small schools in Castevon as well. Students learn how to identify the correct stones for magic, as well as how to cut them, and finally how to use them. Advanced Incorporeals will continue to learn independently by tinkering with known spellwork, but it's not recommended for beginners, and regardless, can be an easy way to get yourself killed.

Relationship to Outsiders

For Incorporeals, the term "outsider" has a lot less to do with who your parents are and a lot more to do with your geography. Most Incorporeals have no problem apprenticing a curious person who has never heard of Incorporeal magic. I suspect this has something to do with how few people actually show interest in studying it. But on Castevon, Incorporeals who live or study elsewhere are nastily referred to as "mainlanders" and typically considered to have lost their way.
