Brother Essex

Brother Essex is a human male priest of the Church of the Silver Flame.

History

Brother Essex has a history of gambling issues. At some point he decided to join the Church of the Silver Flame in an attempt to fight that vice, though it doesn't seem to have worked all that well.
During his time as a Brother in the Church, he became interested in one of the mysteries of the faith, namely Tira's Tomb. According to church doctrine, Tira became one with the Silver Flame in order to defeat the archfiend at the end of the Crusade of Flames. However, Tira’s Tomb apparently exists and is an important location for the rites of High Cardinals and the Keeper herself. So, the question then stands: if she became one with flame, what is buried in Tira’s Tomb? This interest and his continued pursuit of it, got the brother transferred from the Cathedral of the Holy Flame in Flamekeep to the Cathedral of the Cleansing Flame in Sharn.

Campaign

Session 6: Moonlight on the Vine

When the Operatives stopped the Lightning Rail train in Aundair, Essex decided to try to buy the Foundation time in getting the train moving again. In doing so, he revealed himself to be a werewolf. During the fight, Essex nearly died, but was saved by Rasp and helped back onto the train by Marcella as it departed.

Session 9: Street of Skulls

Essex took time to further explain his origins, telling the Phaeros Foundation that he was bred to be a werewolf. Thrane did not wipe out all of the lycanthropes during the Crusade of Silver, opting to instead capture the strongest ones for their own uses. During the Last War, Thrane utilized an all-werewolf troupe, the 66th Infantry, as a silent-ops unit sent in to clean up messy situations and leave none alive. Of the original 20 members of the 66th, only 9 now survive including Essex.

Session 13: Old Estates and New Royals

While the Foundation prepared for the Summer's Cusp Ball, Essex visited Marcella to let her know he was leaving Sharn to seek out the surviving members of the 66th Infantry. He asked if he could write her while he was gone and Marcella agreed. He also let her know that the Foundation didn't need to worry about the Rake anymore.
