Soul Fungus

A relatively recent scourge upon the land, having emerged only a few decades ago. Its origins are shrouded in mystery, with several theories making the rounds. Some believe it's a punishment from the gods for mankind's arrogance, while others think it's a creation of some malevolent entity or an experiment gone wrong.

The first known outbreak of the Soul Fungus was in Mordoom Keep, the truth behind this plight remains unknown to this day.
Mordoom Keep
Building / Landmark | Nov 29, 2023

once a vibrant citadel, now tainted by an unnatural fungal infection.

The fungus quickly spread, consuming the castle and its inhabitants, transforming them into Plaguewalkers – the living dead, their bodies and souls consumed and manipulated by the fungal infection. The once mighty Mordoom Keep turned into a horrifying fungal lair.
Spores carried by wind and water infected the surrounding lands, causing the blight to spread.

Natural/Magical/Monsterous Threat

Discovered During:First contact at the market square in Eastdale, an infected individual was executed by members of The Red Bannermen in front of the town during morning announcements. This occurred just before the winter festival "The Chilled Slaughter".
Discovered at: Mordoom Keep; during a surprise winter storm, the party stumbled upon this location. Drawn by a green glow in hopes of safety and a place to ride out the storm.
  Confirmed Information:
  • The "Soul Fungus" is real.
  • It can infect wildlife in the form of plants and animals.
  • A pack of infected wolves was found outside Mordoom Keep.

Unconfirmed information:
  • Eldreth, the Moss-Walker asked the party to confirm the existence of "The Vermin Hulk"?!
  • There are sewers/tunnels/caves below the keep where goblins are held up.

The fungus appears as a luminescent green mold that glows faintly in the dark. Its most terrifying feature is the soul-like wisps that seem to be trapped within the fungus, giving it its name. These are believed to be the remnants of the souls of those consumed by the fungus, forever trapped in their fungal prisons.
