The Sword-Scholars

  • The Sword-Scholars (often prefixed with Djeran) are a monastic order of swordsmen who devote their bodies to mastering swordsmanship. While they are considered the best swordsmen in the Realm, that is only part of their mission. They believe that through the mastery of the sword one masters themselves. They believe that as a sword is created to pursue one purpose, so too are people. Only by fully mastering one's purpose can one truly extend beyond the limits of their destiny and achieve a type of enlightenment.   Sword-Scholars are few in number, due in part to the intense physical and mental training. Their numbers have lessened after The Djeran Expansion War, where a schism in the order resulted in the excommunication of Sword-Scholars who longed to join the war. Many of these outcast Scholars were inexperienced neophytes who did not survive the conflict. The reputation of the Sword-Scholars waned after the schism. Emeritas Loyalists were dismayed at the impotence of the exiled Scholars, while Rebel Djerans saw the inability of the Iron Teacher to maintain their order to be a sign of weakness.   The Sword-Scholars are led by an Iron Teacher, the most learned of their order. The Iron Teacher is responsible for training the instructors as well as determining martial canon. This canon comes from an extensive library of ancient texts, dating as far back as 2000 BA, each a treatise on swordsmanship and combat from various cultures. While most Iron Teachers throughout the Scholar's history have been anonymous, the current Iron Teacher's identity is known: Master Huun.   The most skilled Sword-Scholars practice a mystical artform known as tashkil alsayf or Sword Shaping. This channeling of psionic energies through their blades allows them to manipulate the world around them in a similar manner to arcane or divine magics.
