History
As aether is sparse in various areas of the world, military organizations sought to develop a means through which to carry aether with them to a battlefield. Though originally creating potions which were imbued with aether, the development of a rune, a highly specialized inscription which converted aether into a particular outcome, allowed militaries to forego intense study of incantations and simply provide their soldiers with a predefined tool. Runes would be developed for all manner of traditional incantations and be available publicly around the world. As each nation developed their own means to utilize these runes, the profession is as varied as its practitioners.
