A Norse expedition to start a colony in Greenland gets "lost" and ends up in the waterways of Masaking, north of Awsranka in the Free Lands. They are firmly pointed towards the territory no one really wants, where the earlier refugees settled.

Frankish individuals given ships and colony building materials and sent west, ending up on shores of the Yucatan. As they are trying to construct a settlement, one of the peoples of the future Ezcan Empire take umbrage at this invasion and effectivly stop the European's efforts cold.
After being handed their heads by the inhabitants of the Yucatan, a remnant of the colonists head north and vaguely west. Each time they encounter an indigionous culture, they are encouraged to keep moving. Sometimes by diplomacy, sometimes by force.
