Moon Women
Heads up: this article discusses infant abandonment. Proceed with caution.
There are two major milestones in a woman's life. First, when as a girl she enters her second growth and begins menstruating, she celebrates her Feast of First Blood. Later, if she gives birth to a baby girl, she is celebrated as a woman in a ceremony that grants her the rights and responsibilities of an adult. But there is a third milestone that is not as widely acknowledged, and which many women will spend their whole lives ignorant of. The society of Moon Women is an elite organization with a highly selective membership. To qualify, a woman must be a firstborn girl, and her first girl must have become a woman.
Structure
As Woman Woman leads the village, she also leads the Moon Women. The hierarchy within the organization depends on how many first girls a member is descended from.
Culture
Upon initiation into the group, a woman learns the full mythology of her culture. For many, this is when they find out that their first one or two (possibly more) pregnancies were not trash as they had been led to believe, but boy babies left in the midden trench. While it may come as a surprise, it is not so much of a shock. Boys are not valued in the women's culture, and since a woman can only get into the society by having eventually had a baby girl, she appears to be an example of evidence that the practice works to prevent girls from being cursed.
View from the future
Because none of the radical women who challenged Moon Wish were members of the Moon Women, knowledge of the organization did not go with them to the vastland coast. Of course other secret societies exist in the modern world, and some of the truths they're hiding are equally horrifying.Remove these ads. Join the Worldbuilders Guild
This article is small, but tells a lot about your world. At least this part of it. Nice that you placed a content warning at the top as well.
Thanks, that is validating feedback. I always try to write articles as if for someone who knows nothing about the world, and it's good to know I succeeded here. I do plan to flesh it out more after badges have been distributed.
