Personal history

Born on the 19th of February to the Eastern Summer court of the Merfolk, Avris was the only child of parents who expected a lot of him. As a quite emotionally stoic culture, Avris challenged the norms of his society throughout his youth, often getting himself into trouble, especially with the authority figures in his life. One thing that stayed constant throughout his life was the warnings of danger that shorefolk posed, them often being portrayed as nothing more than emotionless pray who would not hesitate to murder a mermaid if given the opportunity.
At 19 years old, Avris grew rebellious and swam up to the surface, ignoring his people's warnings. Because of the civil war that was occurring at the time, he came into contact with many Navy vessels, curiosity (and the promise of disapproval from his family) drawing him in. After seeing how much fun the sailors were having, and how they genuinely seemed to care about each other, he went to shore and conscripted.
On his vessel, he quickly befriended fellow new recruits Bugs and Kippers. Using his natural cockiness and charm, he instantly stood out for his ability to make his squad laugh through witty remarks to his superiors. This resulted in frequent punishment from the officers, especially in the beginning of his career.
When Avris was 22 the Civil War ended and Captain Beckett retired. Henry Beckett took over as Captain of the vessel and Avris was promoted to Lieutenant. At 24 he made Commander underneath Captain Henry Beckett.
When Avris was 26, on a routine voyage during the post-war period, Avris felt the sea vibrate. He'd felt this sensation before, and knew something awful was to follow, but hesitated sounding the alarm for fear of being discovered. By the time he had snapped out of it, it was too late. The ship was quickly taken by the sea, and the captain and most of the crew with it. Avris managed to rescue and unconscious Henry from the wreck. taking him to shore. As they reached the beach, Henry began to come-to, opening his eyes just in time to have possibly witnessed Avris transforming back into his human form. In fear, Avris ran to the nearest building, shouting about the shipwreck and calling for help to the injured man on the beach. After people started running towards the beach, he split away and ran as far as he could.
After the shipwreck, he settled in the small, coastal town of Saltmarsh, where he could live under the radar but still be near the ocean. He has become known for being quite handy around the town, helping out the elderly and less able populous. However, now that time has past and the Civil War a somewhat distant memory, he longs to work as part of a team again.

Employment

Avris was a sailor in the Eunish Navy until the sinking of his vessel at the hands of the Kraken in 26 PT. After his semi-honorable discharge, Avris settled in Saltmarsh where he helped out at The Bakewell Family's home and bakery.
In 31 PT, The Council of Saltmarsh summoned him, along with Cordelia Hollywhisk, Antoinette Greyhawk and Damien Sykes to the Town Hall, where they were asked to investigate a dilapidated house just on the outskirts of the town. After uncovering a smuggling opperation which used the guise of the 'haunted' house to stop people from finding them, the four formed The Crimson Sisters and once they acquired a ship, Avris was named Captain.
- Summons letter from The Council of Saltmarsh
He successfully captained the vessel The Crimson Sister during the fight against the Kraken, after which the ship was no longer viable.
Since the battle, Avris has taken on some of the local Dragonborn youth, who he provides a home for in "The Bahaus". He views this work as 'semi-retirement', which he has come out of once in order to help his Dragonborn lover Demitri deal with a dangerous cult of Tiamat worshipers in the noth of Vilcrest.

Mental Trauma

When the ship was destroyed by the Kraken, Avris heard the screams of his dying crew as they were devoured, sounds which he often hears still in his nightmares. He will often wake in the middle of the night screaming, something which scared Rose the first few times it happened, until she learned some of his history.
The Crimson Sisters finally confronted Ursabett in her under sea lair, where she had captured his mother Jeremiah and nailed her to a coffin in the middle of the room. This was enough for Avris to seek her death, however he, along with Cordelia and Annie, were all enevitably killed in the fight.
In his afterlife, Avris was presented with the Feywild. At first, he was within the Seelie Court, where he witnessed revelry and debauchery. Something about it felt wrong however, and he ended up following a haggered old woman away from the Seelie Court. He was then trapped inside the Unseelie Court, where he was bound to a wall where his mouth was filled with cement. After sometime, his parents paid the money to bring him back to life, and even negotiated a pardon which resulted in the ostracisation from the D'Est Clan. He was grateful, and though it broke his heart he knew he couldn't stay, so despite the pleas of his mother he left for the shore once again, passing his father briefly as he went, though no goodbye was said.
Since defeating the Kraken, Avris has reconnected with his parents, who both ended up moving to Saltmarsh and residing in The Wicker Goat. It wasn't long after they became settled that his then boyfriend, Ivelios d'Phiarlan, revealed his intentions to explore the new islands that had been appearing since the splitting of The Tower of Tharizdun. Because Avris was committed to repairing his relationship with his family, he knew he could not go with him, and the two were separated, causing a lot of heartbreak for Avris.

Intellectual Characteristics

Would be a lot smarter if he closed his mouth sometimes.

Social

Religious Views

For most of his life, Avris had no religious leanings and identified as Agnostic. This was until his death at the hands of Ursabett where the reality of the fate his soul was revealed as an afterlife in the Feycourts. Traumatised and not wanting to feed into the Feywild for eternity, Avris allowed Cordelia, Antoinette and Lucien, accompanied by his boyfried Ivelios, to take him on what they dubbed 'God Tour' where they took him to all of the temples in and around the city of Greyhawk. After visiting the Sarenrae temple, where most thought he would be drawn to, he concluded that something about it just didn't feel right; he saw the people that needed the help of the Goddess of Light and Redemption and felt as though he would be taking something away from them if this was who he decided to serve.
The final temple that the group visited was that of Lucien's god, Bahamut. There, Avris felt something click; Bahamut upheld a lot of the same ideology that Avris most valued. He also felt at though by serving him he could protect his people from the injustices done to them.
After the defeat of Anthony after the Dragon Attack on Saltmarsh, Avris made his first promise to Bahamut and began to take on some of his power as a paladin. It was from this point on that he championed justice in His name.
After the defeat of Henry Beckett, Avris was summoned by Bahamut to Mount Celestia. There, Avris was immediately taken by the God, who revealed that Avris's devotion to Him had given Him just the amount of divine power he needed to begin to reform. Here, naked and ontop of the mountain before his god, he made his Oath of Redemption, before riding on the back of a golden dragon to return to the ship.

The Tenants of the Oath of Redemption

Peace Violence is a weapon of last resort. Diplomacy and understanding are the paths to long-lasting peace.
Innocence All people begin life in an innocent state, and it is their environment or the influence of dark forces that drives them to evil. By setting the proper example, and working to heal the wounds of a deeply flawed world, you can set anyone on a righteous path.
Patience Change takes time. Those who have walked the path of the wicked must be given reminders to keep them honest and true. Once you have planted the seed of righteousness in a creature, you must work day after day to allow it to survive and then flourish.
Wisdom Your heart and mind must stay clear, for eventually you will be forced to admit defeat. While every creature can be redeemed, some are so far along the path of evil that you have no choice but to end their lives for the greater good. Any such action must be carefully weighed and the consequences fully understood, but once you have made the decision, follow through with it knowing your path is just.

Illithid Invasion of Eden Prime

During the Illithid invasion of Eden Prime, Avris was able to destroy the body of M.A.R.S.I.A., who had been corrupted by the Illithid vessel. Her goal was to kidnap Damien Sykes, who held memories from alternate possibilities, and thus knew details of how to stop Mind.
