Martian History

The history of Mars is one born out of science, and military might. Perhaps it is cruel irony that it was named after the God of War, but those that live and die for this planet embrace the stereotype. After all, so much martian blood, sweat, and tears went into making this planet habitable, and only the smartest and the toughest can sacrifice today for a better tomorrow

    The Rescue of Mark Watney
    Cultural event

The effort to rescue stranded astronaut Mark Watney is successful, due to collaboration between the American, European, Chinese, and Indian space agencies. This globally televised event foments a strong bond between the different agencies and also reinvigorates international interest in space travel and exploration.   Additionally, Mark Watney's survival skills have shown just how possible it is to survive on Mars with just a little planning.

    Martian Population Increases
    Cultural event

The population of Mars reaches 10,000 permanent residents, and is projected to reach 15,000 by 2065. Interplanetary flights from Earth to Mars leave every 4 years - at oppositions

    Martian Population Reaches 400,000
    Cultural event

As Mars settlements become more advanced, spaceflight becomes cheaper, and the situation on earth becomes even more dire, the rich and the talented are leaving for a new opportunity on the red planet

    Immigration to Mars
    Population Migration / Travel

Things on Earth are getting better, but the population continues to rise while more and more jobs are needed on Mars. Immigration to the red planet has become more and more affordable and the population grows from 400,000 at the beginning of the 2120s, to over 12.4 million by the mid 2150s. However, this is only the beginning.

    A Tenth of a Billion
    Cultural event

In just over 150 years, the population of Mars reaches 100 million people before the end of 2188 due to more and more people emigrating off of Earth. The Martian Colonial Government plans to expand the infrastructure of the planet in order to be able to accommodate the incoming immigrants. Focus on terraforming the dust ball is now the MCG's top priority.

    Invention of The Epstein Drive
    Technological achievement

While modding his own private three-man yacht, Martian Solomon Epstein accidentally invents the Epstein Drive - a hyper-effective fusion-based space engine. This drive utilized magnetic-coil exhaust to increase drive efficiency, enabling spaceships to sustain thrust throughout the entire voyage.   The design was unexpected efficient, and Epstein's drive accelerated continuously at around 11.7g for approximately 37 hours before finally running out of fuel. The yacht reached an end-speed velocity of approximately 5% the speed of light. Unfortunately for Solomon, he died from the high acceleration within minutes and was unable to appreciate the magnitude of his invention.   Once his designs were discovered, the Martian Colonial Government suddenly had access to the outer reaches of the solar system. This gave them a massive technological lead over the old ships of Earth and escalated tensions that had been building over the past century.   Archival video of this event can be found here

    Martian Independence
    Cultural event

Tensions between Earth and Mars had been rising ever since the Martian request for independence was unanimously denied less than 6 years previously. Now, using the Epstein drive as a bargaining chip, the Martian Colonial Government once again requested independence from Earth, in exchange for sharing the technology. Realizing that the MCG could cut off Earth from the wealth of the Belt and Outer Planets (not to mention that if things escalated to a hot war, the Earther ships would be incredibly outclassed by the first generation of Martian ships with Epstein drives), the UN quickly agrees to the offer.   Mars is finally independent from far old Earth.

Formation of the Martian Congressional Republic
    Founding

The Martian Colonial Government formally creates the newly independent Martian Congressional Republic (MCR). Mars is a rising power in the solar system and is fully autonomous and self-sustaining.   However, Martians are still very aware that many aspects of their life are still very much tied to mother Earth. From the names of their cities (even the capital of Mars is named Londres Nova) to their units of time (Days, Weeks, Months, and Years are still used alongside the Martian Sol -24 hours and 39 minutes- and Cycle -687 days-)

    Exploration of the Sol System
    Discovery, Exploration

As improvements on Epstein Drive Technology brings the Belt, Outer Planets, and more solar bodies into reach, there is a renaissance of exploration (and exploitation) of the vast number of resources available for the taking. Both heavily over-populated Earth and quickly growing Mars hire companies to fully... utilize everything possible. Soon, corporations are hiring individuals and even offering incentives to entire families to spend their entire lives on these new planetary bodies, working.   These "Belters" are almost exclusively the working poor from Earth, happy to take a job anywhere as long as it means they get off basic assistance. Belter culture starts to grow as more and more people from all around Earth, Luna, and even Mars bond over spending most of their time in the vacuum of space, and the next to zero-G of the belt

Founding of the Earth-Mars Coalition Navy
    Military action

Due to rising tensions between Earth and Mars, as well as continually increasing instances of piracy in the Belt, the UN and the MCR agree to form the EMCN - The Earth-Mars Coalition Navy as the ultimate peace-keeping force in the solar system. This is undertaken in order to force the two planets to work together while also keeping tabs on each other's military strength. The alliance is tenuous, and to most soldiers and officers in the EMCN there really are still two separate navies. However, this union is doing its purpose of keeping the nuclear planetbusters pointed away from each other.   This does not mean however that the UN and the MCR have become too trusting or relaxed around each other.

    The Vesta Blockade
    Military action

One of the few confrontations of the Earth-Mars Cold War to lead to actual military engagement. The UN blockaded the asteroid Vesta, placing an embargo on Martian terraforming supplies. The blockade consisted of 5 UNN Destroyers, when an MCRN Cruiser flew too close to the blockade. While the details aren't clear on who fired first, suddenly PDCs and Missiles were being launched. A ceasefire was ordered within minutes, however the MCRN Cruiser was able to cripple all 5 UNN Destroyers before then. This lead to the deaths of approximately 80 UN soldiers, and 12 Martians. The technological superiority of the MCRN ships was on full display, and even though the UNN outnumbered the martian fleet approximately 8:1, this battle made it clear that another fight would have roughly even odds.
