Gamet's Landing
The first week safely back in Gamet's Landing I spent in a bed battling a horrid fever. Outside the small wooden house I could hear the sounds of unfamiliar birds and animals in the nearby jungle, their screeches fueling strange fever dreams. When I was finally well enough to be let out of bed I spent quite a bit of time, and a large chunk of my pay, at the villages version of a tavern drinking a brew made from local fruit and listening to stories told by the some of the crazy people who seemed happy exploring the wilds outside the palisades.
Gamet's Landing is a small village located on Sairawa Island, about 150 kilometers north of the Savage Stream where a small creek enters the ocean. It is owned by the Explorers Guild and is used by them as a staging point for their exploration of the jungle on the island. Groups not affiliated with the Guild are welcome in the Gamet's Landing, but accommodations are limited and the Guild charges a premium for the few services that are available.
Demographics
The population of Gamet's Landing changes frequently as groups of adventurers arrive to explore the Sairawa Jungle or go back to the mainland to recuperate. Likewise many of the guards and workers sent here by the Guild only stay for a few years, accepting the assignment due to the increased pay it affords. The village does have a few permanent residents that for one reason or another have chosen to stay.
Government
The village is administered by a Guild representative with the rank of Senior Explorer, who is given the title of Chief Coordinator. This assignment typically lasts 5 years, baring unforeseen circumstances. Some view being assigned to run the village as a punishment, while others see it as an opportunity. The current Chief Coordinator is Aravae Triswraek, a wood-elf ranger who has taken the latter stance. She insists that all travelers in the jungle be on the lookout for new types of flora and fauna, hoping to complete a catalog of at least the areas closest to the village.
Defences
The animals of the jungle are kept out of Gamet's Landing by a 3 meter high wooden palisade. A single gate grant access to the jungle. Three wooden guard towers, approximately 5 meters in height, give a view of the jungle, although the dense foliage makes it difficult to spot most creatures before they are close to the village.
History
Gamet's Landing was first used as a small expeditionary camp by one of the first groups sent by the then recently founded Explorers Guild in 246 GE. The group was led by the legendary warrior Gamet Battier and the camp was named after him. Later groups used the same spot as a lunching point for expeditions into the jungle keeping the name. When it was decided to make a permanent settlement in 293 GE to aid the in continued exploration of the jungle the name had already become permanent.
Architecture
The buildings of the village are all constructed of local wood. The first buildings, dating back to some of the earliest expeditions, were simple log cabins, and most of these still remain. When a permanent settlement was established, dedicated tools and workers were sent, allowing for the construction of proper buildings with wooden walls. The newer houses are all raised slightly and have wooden floors, while the old log cabins were built directly on the ground.
Geography
The village is centered around the small creek that acts as the villages supply of fresh water. A small rise on the north side of the creek is the site of the Chief Coordinator's house, while the rest of the village is located directly on the beach and in a small cleared area inland. The water is too shallow to allow ships close to the shore so they need to weigh anchor a couple of hundred meters out. Goods and travelers are then transported the rest of the way in row boats.
