Java
Java is a small captured moon, orbiting the binary planets of Branch and Anvil, in the Y-539 system. It's long elliptical orbit brings it nearest to the twinned planets once every three years.
The governments on both planets have claimed the moon as their exclusive property. This has lead to a decades long war between the two planets as they fight for control of the moon. As Java's orbit brings it nearer, the two planets enter into an active combat cycle that lasts the entire time that Java is near enough to potentially be reached by one of the planetary forces. Neither government has yet to succeed in landing forces upon the moon, although many destroyed ships have crashed into the moon as a result of the conflict. The "War Season", as it is referred to by the citizens of the warring planets, lasts for approximately eight months of Java's three year orbit.
While the governments of the binary planets do have the technology for space travel, they are unaware of the technology required for interstellar travel. And the technology they do have is not sufficient for manned exploration of the rest of their system, outside of the war efforts aimed at claiming Java.
Star-Pilots on both sides of the conflict have taken to calling the moon "Graveyard", since so many of their comrades have died in the space surrounding the moon.
Geography
The surface of Java is rocky and pockmarked with impact craters. And a scattering of wrecked starships from the ongoing war for control of the moon.
Fauna & Flora
The trace atmosphere on the surface of the planetoid does not support life in any form. What may lie beneath the surface remains as yet to be determined.
Natural Resources
Preliminary findings suggest that the planetoid is rich in heavy metals. Both planets that Java orbits, Branch and Anvil, are relatively poor in these resources.
History
At some time in the distant past, before anything capable of recording the event was present in the system, a rogue plantetoid was captured by a pair of binary planets. When sentient life finally appeared on these planets, they ascribed great portentous value to the arrival an departure of this planetoid. Eventually naming it Java.
