Session 8 - Steamed Frog Legs and Tusk Tenderized Guts

General Summary

Time has advanced to Pharast 26th, 4722. Gozran is soon upon us.

The party took a moment to collect themselves following the battle of the temple guardian and rested. Musing amongst themselves of what to do next, Tristian offered to return to the trading post in their stead to tell Jhod regarding the current status of the temple. The party, seeing this as a good opportunity to continue exploring, decided to take him up on his offer and on the following morning set off west while Tristian parted ways back towards the trading post.

Travelling west, the heroes come to the source of the Skunk River where warm, yet pungent, water flows forth from springs. Upon getting closer to investigate they were beset by a few territorial frogs that were dispatched rather quickly. The springs themselves were nice but nothing else notable was found.

Continuing their exploration a dense fog rolled in as they ventured deeper into the forest. They stumbled upon a ruin of two buildings where a Boggard came out saying "Truce!". Conversation fell flat as he could only speak a few handpicked words. Deciding to leave the creature alone, they left, with the fog clearing up not much longer after that.

The next day they found the den of a creature. Investigating the surrounding area and inside the tracks revealed that whatever lives there was not only out foraging at the moment but large as well. The heroes thought that this could have been the lair of Tuskgutter and decided to hide and ambush the creature. After some time passed the beast itself did return: a large boar that has known and served violence its entire life. The creature was ambling towards its den when it picked up an unfamiliar scent. It took the time to investigate it, snorting all the while, as the party sat with baited breath. Eventually it zeroed it on a source for one of the scents and charged Beatrice LaRue with a gruesome gore. Realizing the ambush failed, everyone sprung into action. Spells slung, Arrows loosed, blades brought down, but the beast stood firm until Enir Fetchling rolled into a advantageous position and struck a telling blow at Tuskgutter's heart. The beast was slain, however it simply didn't notice it. With pure adrenaline pumping through its veins, it turned and in a single strike nearly disemboweled the Fetchling. With Enir bleeding on the ground, Beatrice made her strike against the creature to lay it low but the boar, having had a moment steep in its anger, refused to care about being dead. Eventually a strike from Strongarm laid low the beast, with a brutal bash to Tuskgutter's Jaw dislocating and nearly tearing it off.

Suddenly remembering they needed the head mainly intact to receive the quest reward, Zolahma Yew flies over in a half-panic and half-anger movement and begins to chastise him but puts her words aside to begin saving Enir's guts from being on the receiving end of a gutting. Strongarm himself even quietly mutters "I really have to stop doing that." After a bit of interparty bickering, they make a plan to drag the beast back to Oleg's by creating a small sled and dragging it back.

With the boar aboard the sled, some party members realize they are dangerously close to starvation and decide that hustling is the best course of action. It takes them only two days to get back to the post and from there they show the boar to Oleg who in turn updates them on information regarding the past twelve days. With the trade goods given to Oleg from before, he had a stronger purchasing power during the last trade caravan that passed by and stocked up on some things the heroes might have needed. Additionally he tells them a cloaked human arrived recently and spoke with Jhod Kavken regarding the temple. Saying that last time he saw Tristian and Jhod getting Harrim, Octavia, and Regongar to agree to travel together, at least until the temple.

Finally, Kesten Garess says he received the payment from the Swordlords of Restov regarding the heroes' culling of the local banditry and dispersed a purse of 45 gold pieces. Feeling a bit restless, he asked for an update regarding their adventures and Zola was all too happy to share. One piece of information that he took particular interest in regards to their discovery of the gold mine.
