Storyteller God

The Storyteller God is the god that created the world of Story. She is thought to have created the world by speaking it into existence. Little else is known about her, though, because unlike the Inheritor Gods, she does not speak to mortals, nor does she bestow divine power upon them. This has led theologicians to believe that she does not exist anymore, or left to speak new stories. Even so, her absence has not discouraged a religious following.

Creation of the Story

At first, nothing existed which mortals could concieve, only the realm of gods. Then the Storyteller God created the world by telling a story over one thousand days and nine hundred ninty nine nights without pause. The story was rich, evocative, and detailed enough that it kept telling itself even after she stopped. It is unknown whether she told the story to anyone. Some of the Inheritor Gods claim to have been in the divine audience, while others deny attendance. Regardless, this story (or Story) is the world as is known to mortals.   Theologicians connect aspects of the nature of the world to the fact that it was told as a story. For example, the chaotic, ever-changing wilds are so because the Story evolves over time, while the cities and roads are under the protection of the Inheritor Gods. They argue that the world does not suddenly become entirely inhospitable to mortals because they are a core element of the Story as first told, and that acts of divine intervention are only possible thanks to the malleable nature of a story.   Some scholars, chief among them Aina Solasion, the current head of the Alchemist's Guild argue that the world is not a literal story. The only evidence for the so-called Storyteller Hypothesis is the testimony of the Inheritor Gods. We may be misinterpreting the statements of the Gods, whose knowledge and background is understandably entirely different to that of mortals. These arguments are generally considered heretical by followers of Shik, God of Knowledge and Djang, God of the Forge, so such arguments are usually only presented outside areas where they are the predominant religion.

Cult of the Storyteller

The Cult of the Storyteller is the unofficial name of the loose organization that worships the Storyteller God. They are classified as a cult because they do not worship a god that answers prayers and bestows divine favor. Unlike most cults, it does not have destructive practices, and is generally tolerated in most towns. Worshippers of the Storyteller God generally follow a simple series of tenets: they must collect stories, aid those who tell stories if possible, and most importantly retell stories so that they may live on. They also believe that anyone who tells a story, regardless of whether they actively acknolwedge the Storyteller God is doing an act of worship.   Unsurprisingly, most followers of the Storyteller God are bards, poets, and writers.
