The Mistlands

The Mistlands is a barren region controlled by a group of Witches called the Mistlands Circle. The Witches prefer to be left alone, and have put measures in place to dissuade intrusion, such as Alchemagic fog and undead chimeras patrolling their borders. They live mainly in villages throughout the Mistlands, but they also have a city in the center of the region, where the hills meet the plains.

Geography

The northern Mistlands is an extremely flat plain with spare vegetation. The southern and central Mistlands consist of sharp, steep, hills and deep valleys and gorges. Rain water sometimes pools at the bottom of these ravines, creating marshy, fertile soil where leafy ferns thrive. Huge trees cling to the sides and peaks of the hills. As the name implies, the region is often blanketed by a thick, natural fog. When the fog is broken, it is typically by heavy rains. The Mistlands Circle Witches have augmented the natural fog with a permanent Alchemagic fog a kilometer wide and a kilometer high around the entirety of their territory.

Natural Resources

The Mistlands contain few valuable minerals or gemstone deposits, but there is a mineable deposit of a rare substance called Nedj ore deep in the hills. Nedj ore's only known use is as part of a complex secret process devised by Strat metalworkers to create what they call Newsteel, a unique alloy based on one from their home world. The Circle has an arrangement with the Fluggruhloo clan of Strat in which the Strat are allowed to mine the ore, which is a laborious and time consuming ordeal even with the best available technology, and in exchange they provide the Witches with about a hundred kilograms of Newsteel each year. The Strat never share or sell their steel, making this a very unusual arrangement. There are some enormous trees, but there are too few and they grow too slowly to be harvested on a large scale. The ferns that grow in the gorges between the hills have substantial value to Alchemagic users as ingredients in their magic, but there are no other plants of significant value. With some effort portions of the flat plains have been turned into farmland, but the lack of sunlight severely limits what can be grown.
