Hnitlanna

Clasher of Chains

Hnitlanna (lit. "clash of chains") is the goddess of liberty, perseverance, revolution, and wind. She is depicted as a woman dressed in ragged clothes with a broken chain held aloft in one hand and a broken sword in the other. She is the only god in the Brymtuscan Pantheon who was born a mortal and ascended to godhood through her actions.   Shrines dedicated to Hnitlanna can be located anywhere, but more often than not in cities and towns. Her shrines take the form of simple pedestals upon which lay a metal chain pierced by a sword thrust into the top of the pedestal.

History

Hnitlanna was born into slavery in 145 PS in the highlands of northern Brymtusc near what would later become Loch Uaigh na Nathrach (o na nath-rach). During this time, Brymtusc was ruled by a group of greatwyrms and ancient dragons that had enslaved the peoples of the continent. On July 19, 120 PS, she killed her half-dragon master and lead her fellow slaves out of captivity and into hiding. After this, she and many of the slaves she escaped with formed the Broken Vigil, an abolitionist group that became known as freedom fighters, liberating slaves and smuggling them off Brymtusc.   As their numbers grew, Hnitlanna and the Broken Vigil led a slave revolt against the greatwyrm that controlled the highlands, a faerie dragon greatwyrm known as Mèirleach Òir, the Gold Thief, to the highlanders, or as Gullhyrndþjófr, the Golden-Horned Thief to the peoples of Armvíðir . After days of battle against the greatwyrm and most of the Broken Vigil dead, Hnitlanna managed to strike a fatal blow on the greatwyrm as it flew after fleeing slaves. The greaywyrm's body landed with such tremendous force that a crater was formed and Brymtusc was shaken with an earthquake. As it lay dying, Hnitlanna cut through the dragon's neck shortly before she too died from the wounds she had taken during the fight. It is said that the dragon's blood filled the newly-formed crater, and as she moved on to the afterlife, Hnitlanna was granted godhood for becoming a living embodiment of liberty. Her ascension cleansed the blood-flooded crater, purifying it and changing it to water, forming Loch Uaigh na Nathrach.
