Armvíðir (arm-vith-er)

Armvíðir (arm-vith-er) is an collection of petty kingdoms in control of numerous swaths of land and islands in the Armvíðic Gulf. The Gulf of Armvíðir, called Grunn Sævi or the Shallow Sea, was formed during the Sundering, during which the mountainous and hill-land terrain sunk down and were engulfed by the sea, and as such, the many islands within the Grunn Sævi were once the summits of hills and mountains.   The eastern reaches of the Armvíðic mainland mainly consists of the the plains and woodlands that stretch to the Greneburg Mountains, beyond which is Ælnea. The kingdoms are thalassocratic, their territories scattered across the isles of the Gulf and beyond into the Carnnui Ocean, and hence harbors one of the most powerful navies in the world, though even this does not prevent piracy in the more fringe islands under Armvíðic dominion.

Structure

Konungr (king)

The kingship is a hereditary title, though a king can scarse rule a long without the consent of the people. Kings and Queens serve as judges during assembies, as priests during important sacrifices, and as a military leader during times of war.

Jarl (duke)

Jarl is the highest noble title below the king. Each kingdom only has one jarl. Aside from being tasked with the administrative management of their allotted territory, jarls appoint de facto rulers in the event that the king is a minor or falls seriously ill. They also appease pretenders to the throne without giving the pretender the title of king.

Housecarl (retainer)

A free servant or household bodyguard. Housecarls are trained warriors and are paid as a full-time soldier.

Karl (freeman)

A karl is a common person living within a kingdom.

Frjálsi (freedman)

A Frjálsi, or freed-person, is a person who was released from slavery. Freedom from slavery can be achieved through several means: their captor/owner freeing them, the freedman being emancipated along with a group, or through self-purchase.

Þræll (slave)

A Þræll, or thrall, is a slave. Only one Armvíðic kingdom practices slavery to this day, which is the petty kingdom of NorÞulf, which lies between the Ulfdrekka river and NorÞæn Vatn, who use prisoners of war as a labor force for their mines.
