New York
New York City was historically one of the largest cities in North America and a global centre of commerce, culture, media and politics with it hosting the original United Nations Secretariat and General Assembly, then supranational organizations. With the unification of Earth's sovereign countries, New York City became the United Nations's de facto capital city, while the Court of Justice as the judicial branch remained in The Hague.
Due to rising sea levels and worsening storm surges, New York's coastlines were reinforced and fortified by an extensive system of barriers and walls. Additionally, with Earth's population continuing to grow throughout the next century New York City grew into a megalopolis with dozens of millions of inhabitants, struggling to accommodate the rapidly growing population with shelter, food and water, and sanitary systems. A large portion of New York's population lives on Basic Assistance.
