Ajest was the human wizard mentor of Legolass Darkblade and secretly a member of the Hand of Mana.

History

Born in 1404, Ajest spent the vast majority of his life in scholarly pursuits, focusing his time and efforts towards becoming a renowned wizard. Over time, he drew the attention of the Hand of Mana and was inducted into their ranks. As part of the Hand, Ajes specialized in object retrieval and subsequent destruction or containment.
In the early 1470's, Ajest caught a young elven thief named Legolass attempting to pickpocket him. Ajest found himself impressed by her and decided to take her in, seeing as she had no where else to go. Legolass lived with and learned from Ajest for the better part of a decade, though Ajest kept secret from her his involvement in the Hand of Mana.
In 1478, Ajest recovered the ancient artifact Bastion intending to destroy it to prevent its evil from reappearing. However, Bastion proved to be too strong for Ajest. In desperation, the wizard used what remained of his life to seal Bastion's sentience, rendering the sword inert. However, this final action took all of Ajest's being, making it appear that he had simply disappeared. Legolass returned that day to find her mentor gone and only a rapier in its place. Legolass left, taking Bastion with her, assuming it was a parting gift.
Years later, during the Battle at the Well of Dragons on the 2nd of Marpenoth, 1492, a fully awakened and revived Bastion brought forth Ajest's soul during his confrontation with the Breadwinners. However, Legolass managed to destroy Bastion's physical form, rendering the sword inert again and freeing all the souls he had collected to pass into the afterlife, including Ajest's.
