Great Conch

The Great Conch is an object of great sacred and cultural value to the triton of Toril and the Elemental Plane of Water, which stores the collected memories of all of the triton people.
The organization that guards and communes with it, the Maluhada, holds a similarly revered place in triton society.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

Whether as a result of the triton people's creation or from a choice made long ago, the Great Conch is connected to each and every triton alive across both the Material Plane and the Elemental Plane of Water. Their experiences, thoughts, and hopes flow into the conch, where they remain even upon that triton's death.
When the Great Conch recognizes an act of great heroic import, something done only a few times every generation, it communes with the Elder of the Future, one of the leaders of the Maluhada, which allows the elder to bestow upon that triton and their family an earned last name, the greatest honor any triton can recieve. Because the conch remains connected to all of the triton, and because the triton have absolute faith in the conch's discerning abilities, the heroic acts recognized by it are taken as factual, even when no living triton witnessed the act of heroism in question.
In addition, triton about to undergo a great quest, battle, or decision can petition the Elder of the Past to commune with the conch for aid. Using the elder as a conduit, the petitioner can receive a vision from the conch of some event from its stored memory that can provide guidance.
