Infernal Puzzlebox
An infernal puzzblebox is a small container composed of airtight, interlocking parts designed to safeguard contracts signed between devils and mortals.
Mechanics & Inner Workings
When an object small enough to fit inside of the box is placed inside, the container magically seals around it and no magic can force the box open. The box is also immune to nearly all forms of damage.
Each box is given a mundane means of opening it that requires adjusting or moving the exterior parts in a certain order. Creatures that study the box for significant periods of time may figure out how to open the puzzlebox, but doing so is extraordinarily difficult, and creatures that fail profoundly are subjected to psychic damage.
History
An infernal puzzlebox was given to High Observer Naja Bellandi of Elturel in 1447 to safeguard the pact she made with Archduke of Avernus Zariel to end the Reign of Vampires.
After Bellandi was assassinated, the puzzlebox was guarded by the cult of Zariel, eventually ending up in the hands of High Observer Thavius Kreeg, who carried it with him to Baldur's Gate when he left Elturel before the city was damned to Hell. The puzzlebox was then given to Thurstwell Vanthampur, who was then killed by the Lost Star Detectives. The adventurers then took the puzzlebox to Candlekeep, where it was opened by the infernal scholar Sylvira Savikas, giving the Detectives access to the pact inside.
