Upper City

The Upper City of Baldur's Gate is the portion of the city sealed off by the original city walls. It is home to the patriar aristocracy of and is a place of beauty , splendor, and privilege. Magical lights illuminate clean streets, most of the city's temples reside here, and all the finest stores are located within the walls of the Upper City.
Residents of the Upper City feel a great pressure to maintain outward appearances and will keep their estate's facade finely maintained even at the cost of pawning everything within. Admitting to poverty in this district is admitting to shameful failure.
The Upper City has its own unique police force, the Watch, which maintains order in the district. One of the Watch's chief duties is to guard the gates of the old wall, barring anyone from entry who does not have the proper paperwork or escort, effectively banning the poor from ever entering the district.
