Naval Ship Crew

Watches

Tellurian Navy ships follow a 3-section "dogged watches" schedule based on a 24-hour standard day:
  • Tacit or Silent Watch: 0000 - 0400
  • Lucis or Morning Watch: 0400 - 0800
  • Matus or Forenoon Watch: 0800 - 1200
  • Exped or Afternoon Watch: 1200 - 1600
  • ExpedCan or Afternoon Dog Watch: 1600 - 1800
  • SeroCan or Late Dog Watch: 1800 - 2000
  • Sero or Late Watch: 2000 - 0000

Crew Divisions

For the purpose of watch scheduling, crew are assigned to one of three divisions:
  • Sink Watch is under supervision of the First Officer
  • Gen Watch is under supervision of the Second Officer
  • Duff Watch is under supervision of the Third Officer or Master's Mate.

Duty Assignments

The duty assignments for a ship's complement will vary depending on the size of the ship. On many ships, officers and noncommissioned may have more than one duty assignment. On all ships, enlisted have both a rigging section assignment and another duty assignment - when a flow-pressure ship is being rigged, it's "all hands on deck" as the management of rigging and sails at speed is a job requiring large numbers of hands who all know exactly what they're doing. During the long periods when there is no rigging needed, other duty assignments occupy crew.
