Naval Ship Types and Classes

Battleship or Ship-of-War

Ships equipped to act in concert for major operations with large gun complements and attack capabilities. They generally act in groups and a Ship-of-War will usually be flagship in a mixed group. They are not as maneuverable or fast as Cruisers but their armament is more formidable and they may be equipped with space-to-surface batteries and up to four Littorals- supported, lightly-armed fast insystem fighters that can act as screens, couriers, and highly mobile short-range strike forces.

Ships-of-War are "rated" based on the number and types of gun batteries they carry, with First Rate being equipped with a minimum of four full flank batteries of which at least one is a full battery of EMT pulse beams.

Classes

  • The Dorenyl Class are the newest and fastest group of First-Rate Ships of War with the most modern configuration and armaments, they run about 120 meter hulls with 46.3k m3 internal volume (IV). Crew complement: 560
  • The Starvik Class are the most numerous and about 20% are Second-Rate Ships of War as they're rigged as command ships with extra Littoral, communications, flag conns and other configuration modifications. They are 126 meter hulls with 62.5k m3 IV. Crew complement: 510
  • The Janghu Class include two hull configurations: a small number of First-Rates but mostly Second- and Third-Rate ships. The hulls are 114m with 43k m3 IV. Crew complement: 470-495

Heavy Cruiser/Battle Cruiser

Cruisers are ships equipped for range and versatility, they can operate alone as ships of patrol or in battle groups. Heavy cruisers may be equipped with space-to-surface weapon batteries and they often command convoy protection groups or anchor system defense battlegroups. Heavy cruiser classes range from 90 - 111 meter hulls with IVs in the 33 - 40k m3 range. There are three classes in service: Arxapur, Rossnyk, and Piet Ynssan. Crew complements: 320-380

Light Cruiser/Star Cruiser

Faster than a Battle Cruiser, Star Cruisers are often used as ships of patrol and flexible armed transports or couriers in battle zones, or intersystem scouts. They are the most versatile ships with a very long range and although more lightly-armed than the larger Destroyer ship classes, they are very manueverable and formidable in battle groups. They are frequently deployed in light convoy protection duty or as system defense patrols. Star Cruiser classes range from 82 - 104 meter hulls with IVs ranging from 25 - 35k m3. There are four classes in service: Rheinstav, Nelderlyk, Ord Waerdos, and Laukepele. Crew complements: 320-345

Destroyers

The backbone of the TF Navy, there are more destroyers than any other warship type, and they come in several varieties: Hunters, Cordons, Consorts, Protectors, and Attackers. They all carry the heaviest armaments for their size of any ship type, but vary as to range and speed. Destroyer hulls range from 70 - 90 meters with IVs ranging from 23.5 - 39k m3.

Hunter Destroyers are the fastest type of destroyer and are generally tasked with insystem warfare functions like taking out orbital defense platforms, reducing arcology fortresses or bases, finding and destroying insystem fighters, etc. There are two classes, Gavashin and Fubuki. Crew complements: 200-260

Cordon Destroyers are the most heavily-armed type and act as siege boats. They are configured with space-to-surface weapons, most also have a pair of well-armed Littorals they can deploy as mobile strike or defense teams. There are three classes, Mark Xan, Pegrade, and Thunderbolt. Crew complements: 240-280

Consort Destroyers have the longest range and lightest weapon load of destroyer types (although still heavily armed compared to comparable-size Star Cruisers). They are deployed for convoy protection and may also be configured as heavy escorts for Ships-of-War. Classes in service include Vrrash-ji, Selmik, and Tamakota. Crew complements: 190-260

Protector Destroyers are all-around destroyers configured with the longest-range armament available and act as "stand off" protection for convoys, battlegroups, and insystem defense groups. They may also be configured with additional communication and analysis capabilities and used in intelligence and special personnel transport misisons. There are two classes in service, Al-Wahrain and Vigilance. Crew complements: 230-250

Attacker Destroyers are configured for ship-to-ship close combat in battle groups and may carry large Marine contingents trained for hostile boarding, with specialized small boats armed to pierce ships' passive anti-boarding defenses. Three classes are in service: Raptor, Sundarran, and Xihe Spill. Crew complements: 180-235

Corvettes

Smaller ships configured for range and maneuverability, some types are also configured for insystem speed. They come in a range of classes configured for transport, courier, escort, search-and-rescue, customs and insystem patrol functions. Sizes range from 58 - 72 meters with IVs of 11 - 21k m3. Classes in service, ranging from smallest to largest: Drelth, Oslo, Eban Ansketty, Muhleyne, and Vingarrn. Crew complements: 155 - 200

Frigates

Highly variable in size and configuration, but generally range is sacrificed for other functions, they're ships-of-station deployed as system, base or platform defense, and added to incoming battlegroups as flexible and capable escorts, patrols, scouts, and medium-range attack vessels. They're often used for customs interdiction. Sizes range from 50 - 70 meters with IVs of 10 -20k m3. Classes in service, ranging from smallest to largest: Stingray, Bandar, Talavan, Ard Karri, Grushkev, Mian Toc, and Viscount. Crew complements: 135 - 190

Small Boats

"Small Boat" is the TF Naval term for small insystem ships carried by larger ships for specific work.

Littorals are well-armed insystem combat ships carried by Ships-of-War and Destroyers. They have both impressive square suits of light-pressure sails and powerful short-range insystem drives, as well as up to three half-batteries of weapons.

Cutters are larger boats with some cargo capability, a half-battery of guns and possibly bow and/or stern chasers, and highly maneuverable square sail suits. Larger cutters may have foreaft rigs as well and be configured as mini-escorts.

Shuttles are medium-to-large unarmed insystem boats with atmosphere landing capability.

Tenders are confusingly named as there are insystem merchant ships with this name as well. They are medium-to-large unarmed insystem boats optimized for cargo carriage and transfer.

Pinnaces are small insystem short-range powerdrive boats, some may have atmosphere landing capability and most have a stern chaser gun suite, they are mainly used for small personnel transport tasks.

Safeboats are the equivalent of lifeboats, optimized for survival of small groups. Naval ships have both safeboats and pods. Safeboats have a small square suit but no insystem drive as power is reserved for survival gear.

In addition to all of these types of ships, the Navy purchased and operates a variety of specialized ship types, including Minesweepers, Cargo Carriers, Personnel Transports, Packets, and Fast Couriers.
