Dragon

The native denizens of the Dragonic Realm, known for the intense magicka they give off - a result of having high magicka and living in a realm rich in magicka.   There are three variants of dragons, arising from the influence of other species.   Dragon   The original form of the species, unaltered by outside influence.   Lamia   A subset of dragon that arose from dragon and elf relations, with the elven heritage carried through dragon generations.   Cockatrice   A subset of dragon that arose from dragon and fae relations, with the fae heritage carried through dragon generations.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Dragons are shapeshifters with two forms - their Large Form and Small Form.   A dragon's large form is that of a quadrupedal lizard with large, leathery wings, horns on their heads that run down the length of their body, and a mane of hair down the length of their bodies and tails. They have cow-like ears.   A dragon's small form has a humanoid torso with a quadrupedal reptilian lower body. It retains its wings, and the humanoid torso has leathery skin.   A lamia's large form has only two front legs, with a snake-like body, and spikes in place of horns. A lamia's smaller form has a snake lower body.   A cockatrice's large form has only two back legs, with wings positioned where arms would be, and a mane of fur that ends at the lower back. A cockatrice's small form had bipedal reptilian legs with a prehensile tail.

Genetics and Reproduction

Dragons reproduce through magical egg-laying, and incubation usually lasts about one year.    Besides other dragons, they can reproduce with elves and fae.

Civilization and Culture

History

Dragons tend to live in small groups of three to four in the same age group, and so have not formed full societies and kingdoms. However, there are ten dragon kings - determined every one hundred fifty years through a series of contests. In this way, the Ten Dragon Kings are considered the strongest, fastest, and wisest of all others. For dragons admire strength in all its various forms.   Unlike elves and fae, dragons are unable to actively guide magic - they are, perhaps more than the other two, beings composed of magic instead. Their shape-shifting ability, capacity for flight, and magical breath are all subconscious uses of great magic.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Dragons often form relationships with Elf and Fae partners, due to the close relationship of their realms. These are not seen as particularly special for being commonplace.    Dragons rarely interact with species outside these two, and so see relationships between any other species as novel.
