Alaska
Alaska is the northern most state of the United States. It is a semi-enclave, surounded primarily by Canada, though it also shares a maritime border with Russia to the west.
Alaska is by far the largest U.S. state, being larger than the next three largest states combined. It is also the most sparsely populated state. Approximately half the total population of the state live in Anchorage, the largest city in the state, or its surrounding metropoltan area. The current state capital is Juneau, which although smaller than Anchorage is still larger than the state of Delaware.
The first Europeans to colonise the indiginous lands were the Russians, and the area which is now Alaska was once called Russian America. Russia sold the territory to the U.S.A. in 1867. It became an official U.S. territory in 1912, and was admitted to the union as a state in 1959.
More than half the state is federally owned public land, including national forests, parks, and wildlife refuges.
Alaska has the highest percentage indigenous population of any U.S. State, and more than two dozen native languages are spoken in the state.
