Austria
Austria is a country in Alps in Central Europe. It is a federation of nine states, one of which is the capital, Vienna. It shares borders with German to the northwest, the Czech Republic to the north, Slovakia to the northeast, Hungary to the east, Slovenia and Italy to the south, and Switzerland and Liechtenstein to the west.
Austria was originally a margraviate of Bavaria, before being made a duchy (later archduchy) of the Holy Roman Empire in 12th century. Following the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire in 1804, Austria established its own empire, but this was dissolved following the Austro-Prussian War of 1866. The following year, the Austro-Hungarian Compromise established joined rule, forming Austro-Hungary.
After the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in 1914, Austro-Hungary declared war on Serbia, beginning World War I. Its defeat led to the creation of the First Austrian Republic in 1919. During the interwar period, anti-parliamentarian sentiments culminated in the formation of a fascist dictatorship in 1934. A year before the outbreak of World War II, Austria was annexed into Nazi Germany. It was occupied by Allied forces following the end of the war, not regaining sovereignty until 1955.
Austria is a member of the United Nations and the European Union, and was a founding member of Interpol.
