After Mar-Vell was killed, she lived at the Joint Dark Energy Mission Facility, where she encountered Nick Fury and the amnesiac Carol Danvers.
During a battle in Mar-Vell's laboratory between Danvers and Starforce, Goose swallowed the Tesseract.
After Danvers left Earth to assist the Skrull refugees in finding a new planet to settle, Nick Fury adopted Goose. A scratch from Goose was the cause of Fury loosing the use of his left eye.
Goose eventually vomitted up the Tesseract, which is how it came to be in S.H.I.E.L.D. custody at the time of the Chitauri Invasion.
