Captain Maria Rambeau was the a former US Airforce officer, and the first director of S.W.O.R.D..
Through her ex-girlfriend and lifelong friend Carol Danvers , she formed an interest in space, and in particular, the threat posed to earth by extra-terrestrial sentient life. She was instrumental in the creation of S.W.O.R.D. to monitor these threats, and was appointed the first director of the project, a possition she held until 2018.
