Maryland

Maryland is a U.S. state, bordered by Virginia to its south, West Virginia and Washington DC to the west, Pennsylvania to the north, and Delaware and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. The most populous city is Baltimore, and the capital is Annapolis.

Prior to colonisation, Maryland was inhabited by the Algonquian, Iroquois and Sioux peoples. After Europeans landed in the region, Maryland was founded by George Calvert as a haven for Catholics persecuted in England. In 1632, Charles I of England named the colony after his wife, Henrietta Maria. Although a slave state, Maryland remained in the Union during the American Civil War.

Maryland has the highest median income of any state. It is one of the most multicultural states in the country and it is one of the six states where non-Whites compose a majority of the population.
