Salerno

A city Campania, located on the Tyrrhenian Sea. The area has been inhabited continuously since pre-historic times, with the city itself begining construction under the Romans. Prior to the unification of Italy, it was the capital of an independant principality. It is divided into three zones, a medieval old town, a 19th century sector, and a large post-war sector.

It is home to the Schola Medica Salernitana, the world's first medical school, and was a center of medieval art, culture and learning. The patron saint of Salerno is Matthew the Apostle, whose relics are kept in Salerno Cathedral.

Several battles of Operation Avalanche, the invasion of Italy by the Allies during World War II, took place near Salerno, and it was used as a base of operations by some Allied forces, including the Strategic Scientific Reserve.
