Venice
Venice is a city in Italy, built on an archipeligo of 118 islands located in the shallow Venetian Lagoon, between the mouths of the Po and Piave rivers. The islands are separated by canals and linked by over 400 bridges.
The city was the capital of the Republic of Venice for over a millennium, from 697 to 1797. It was a major financial and maritime power during the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and a staging area for the Crusades, as well as an important center of commerce and art. After the Napoleonic Wars, it was annexed by the Austrian Empire, and later became part of the Kingdom of Italy in 1866.
The lagoon and a part of the city are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
